a Fraternal Uncle of mine was a ball turret gunner on a B-17. The put short guys into the turret and there wasn't enough room in the turret for a parachute. For the gunner to bail out the turret had to be retracted into the aircraft so the ball's hatch could be opened. While over hostile territory a flack round exploded close enough to blow the back of the turret out and jam it in the down position. He had to hang on to the gun grips to keep from falling out. When the were coming in to land in England he was praying the gear wouldn't collapse. The nearly had to break his fingers to release his grip.

Toad, the world isn't the same without those guys running the show. This guy does a very nice job describing the terror those crews experienced in those bombers. Extremely good read. -Anymouse

Rog, so inspired was I by this photo this morning, I stopped by the club and fired a hundred rounds out of the old M1 Carbine. Bump fired a 15 round mag for Kim, cause it's old school, and I'm a rifleman. Second Amendment was riding high in the saddle. -Anymouse
