It was a massive effect in the compilation of New York Wealth. Between 73 and 84% of all European trade was in paid for by exports from the Slave South. The laws had been jiggered to make virtually all of the import trade come through New York.
In 1860, New York was making about 200 million dollars per year off of the European trade which was paid for by Southern exports.
That was all slave money.
Slave money also paid for the same percentage of running the Federal Government in Washington DC.
When the South declared independence, New York and Washington were going to lose the vast bulk of European trade with North America, and they were very upset about it. The threat of this loss of income is the real cause of the Civil War.
