Knock Knock

My normal bathroom reading material consists of crossword puzzles. On a lark,
I decided to reread 1984. I could have read Atlas Shrugged or War and Peace
in less time, but I am reading 1984 one dump at a time.

I was hit by a thought this time around. When did Winston Smith betray himself
and Julia? It happened very early in the book when he bought the notebook from
Mr. Charrington in his shop. He and Julia were both screwed from the beginning
which was long before Smith laid eyes on Julia.

An all-powerful totalitarian police state is the end destination of all collectivist
regimes. The NKVD or the KGB is no different than the Stasi or the Gestapo in their
tactics. Hitler merely bypassed the socialist phase and went full steam ahead into
a fascist police state, something the USSR at least pretended to do at first.

These days, you can add "FBI" to that August group.
