I saw the stage play on Broadway, then a second time in Baltimore, and IMHO, the movie was an alternatively leaden and manic pale shadow of the play.
The play, with it's simple staging, put all the focus on the music, words and ideas of the characters, and was absolutely stunning, probably the best play I ever saw on stage.
The actor playing Salieri, Ian McKellen, owned the play and the audience, actually drawing the audience in and talking directly to them as ghosts of the future about his situation, his begging God for fame, and his sudden realization that he was forsaken by God and condemned to mediocrity. The movie lost all the God-Salieri tension by Salieri's addressing some third party rather than the audience.
I'll never forget seeing that play, and I'd see it again if it had a good Salieri.
