The Christmas Chronicles

In our opinions (me and mo-sup), the best Christmas movies of all time are A Christmas Story (1983), and Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Let The Christmas Chronicles (Netflix) join them.

WIND RIVER

People are always asking; "Say, Rodge .."
.

RODGE: We're looking to watch a movie tonight that stars a bunch if unknowns in what is the best movie made in 2017. Got any hints?

Pedro from Omaha

Wind River

Whoa, Pedro.  Here it is!  A little gritty, but, hell yes!

FAUDA

FAUDA
Fauda (فوضى; means "chaos" in Arabic) is an Israeli political thriller television series.

If you missed the initial series, as did we, then good.  Because, now you don't have to wait a year to watch the next 12 episodes of this depiction of the depth of brutality with which Israelis and HAMAS-ISIS engage in on a daily basis.  Of course the Israelis are the righteous in this saga  The Muslims, poor bastards, don't know that they are savage idolaters whom the civilized world wish would STFU and go away. Sigh.

"The wrong kid died!"

cinema à la carte

UPDATE
When I returned to watching there was/is a plethora of explicit genitalia (both
persuasions) and drug taking that I had not anticipated.  Just so you know.

Still funny as hell.
"Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story", starring John C. Reilly ... who plays a 14 year old boy that  accidentally cuts his super talented brother in half with a machete (The Wrong Kid Died), learns how to play blues guitar in a single sitting -- in a movie made nearly a decade ago and I never heard of it and it all works (so far; I'm only 30 minutes into it and am blown away enough to tell you ASAP).  Here's a few comments:

One of the funniest movies I've ever seen definitely in my top five

This movie is so good, I have problems convincing people to watch it

You're welcome

APPLE, PENNY, TABLE

cinema à la carte

THE FEAR
(Netflix)

The FEAR

I started watching The Fear last night.  Late last night. In brief: A Brighton crime boss turned entrepreneur and the disintegration of a criminal mind.  That's very brief.  This film features Albanian mobsters who, I believe, once ran a school for ISIS newbies on how to get your point across.  But here's what I'm posting this for.

Richie is an aging Brit crime boss who owns Brighton. His two sons, Matty and Cal (he, something of a half wit)  run the business while Richie enjoys his golden years.  Then two things happen.

First, Richie flys off the handle when a unicyclist rests his arm on his chauffeured car at a stoplight.  Richie throws open the door and beats the living crap out of the kid. This, on a crowded street, so the coppers soon have a description and plate number of the perp.  When Richie is confronted with it, he genuinely has no recollection.  That's a clue.

Meanwhile, the Albanians have started taking over his turf.  Matty and Cal, especially Cal, muck things up by promising things they cannot deliver.  The Albanians let them know they won't negotiate, and deliver that  message by leaving  the decapitated head of Cal's girlfriend f under his bed pillow .  FWIW, I found this to be the most horrific and artful display of that genre, ever!

Cutting to the chase.  APPLE, PENNY, TABLE

Richie is convinced he has a memory problem; probably Alzheimer's, but won't give in to it.  He visits an old Dr. friend who asks him 5 things:

  1. Remember the words apple, penny, table
  2. What date is it.
  3. The Season?
  4. Count backwards from 100 by sevens (subtract 7)
  5. And finally, what were the three words?
Richie comes close with the date, missing by a day. The season?  Fall.  Spot on.   He stumbles counting backwards, but gets the first 3 or 4 iterations.  But he can't remember TABLE.  But wait. A few minutes later he remembers Table.

Which leads me to this tenuous aside:

You prolly, like me, took the test with Richie.  How did you do?  I ask this for a reason.

I'll need to check your I.D. ....

I knew there was a movie called The Big Short.  I knew it was about the sub-prime housing collapse. I knew it had an outstanding cast.  I didn't watch it even after it hit free streaming status because it was too painful to re-live.

Like today,
I know that every elected Democrat, and at least ½ of all Republicans, are MFCS.  The only difference between the two:  Democrats are Marxists; Republicans self serving shits, and we're teetering on  the edge of anarchy and civil war.  I'm tired of reading about it. La-La-La-La La. There is nothing new to learn. It's painful.

I knew, then, that the 1980 bond collapse was caused entirely by Congressman Barny Frank and every other Democrat on the House or Senate Banking Committees. And other Dems running loose at Fannie May.

This morning (Hey it's just 7:41 A.M. NOW!) I gave in and watched the Big Short on my bed-Pad..  I am exhilarated!  Really. It was all just too beautiful.  The lambs were not led to slaughter. No. The good guys
the winners were just smart enough to check birth certificates at the door.  Simple as that.

You're welcome.

Monty Python meets Game of Thrones

cinema à la carte

Do You Like ‘Game of Thrones’ ...
But Wish It Were Hilarious?
When to watch: Now, on Netflix.

Norsemen

This six-part English-language Norwegian comedy is set in 790 in a Viking village, and it’s like a supremely filthy and ridiculous “Parks and Recreation” or “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” obsessed with the little social frictions of a small town.

It’s also a satire of the “grimey olden days” prestige drama. There’s a lot of scatalogical, sexual and gross-out humor, so it’s not for the sensitive, but it’s also surprisingly endearing. There’s so much to poke fun at in shows like “Vikings” and “Game of Thrones,” and “Norsemen” makes the most of it. [Cuzzin Ricky]

I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds and looks promising.  Here's a sample

Miss Meadows;Dressmaker

cinema à la carte

People are always asking ...

Rodge:  I'm a lurker.  I love your movie picks, and pass them on to my husband as my own finds. He always loves them. However, it's like you hardly do cinema picks lately, so I've had to use my own judgment and Harry (hubby) complains that I've lost my touch and he's going back to YouPorn.  Help!

Holly

Two Winners

Well, Holly, here's two that are under the radar from Amazon. The Dressmaker started slowly, and my wife was fidjitating.  "Hang on, I cautioned. I watched the trailer and you'll like it."  I was right.  Miss Meadows was another winner.  Did you like "Serial Mom? This has an unexpected ending.

Finally. I stumble upon MAGIC CITY last night, and before I knew it ...  3 episodes.  I'm hooked.
