WHERE DID THIS HAPPEN?

American Experience; Woody Wilson Saga II

I watched this Friday.  As much as I like American history, Woody Wilson has always disinterested me.  I think because, growing up, all the WW1 movies were sepia toned, full of mud, and nightmarish. WWII movies were like John Wayne. Plus, I saw  Woodrow Wilson's place in history as one of failure. His League of Nations plan, thankfully stopped by a resurgent GOP congress, was a predictable boondoggle (see United Nations).   Also, after Wilson had a stroke his wife Edith became, quite illegally, the defacto President.  And things went to hell.

Now, I post this only because I'm compelled to; not because I suspect anyone will waste part of their Sunday on it.  Which is too bad, because the nation under post war Wilson was in much the same predicament we find ourselves in today.  I mean, the United States was ripe for bloody rebellion and civil war.

"Where Did This Happen?"

The wife was washing/waxing the adjacent kitchen floor and listening to the dialog.  At one point she called in, "Where did this happen?  You get the point.

Of course Wilson was a self-described "progressive."

Fractured History- AHEM

After war was declared on Japan in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted to issue an executive order that allowed  regional military commanders to designate "military areas" from which "any or all persons may be excluded." The worry, of course, were the 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry who lived on the Pacific coast that posed a threat; relocating them to the interior would isolate that threat.  His wife Eleanor, however, argued that what he proposed was blatant racism, and threatened to publicly lobby against him (and, supposedly, reveal that he had been banging her girl friends).  He relented.

So it was that when the Chicago Tribune published, in June 1942, that we had broken the Jap naval code,  Japanese agents quickly alerted agents in California who relayed the information to Japan.  The US never recovered, and was forced in 1945 into negotiations that resulted in the loss of our Pacific bases, including the Phillipines and Hawaii.

Mr Peabody

Mr. Peabody & Sherman

I was actually stunned when MoSup admitted to not knowing about Mr. Peabody.  When I explained that it was a side show on Rocky and Bullwinkle, she drew another blank and blamed her ignorance on not having a television as a kid until she was 8; (1986?).  Streaming on Netflix, this is great fun for all ages.

This is kinda interesting, seeing the English repel repeated assaults, then the Prussians came-in from the east and hit the French flank.  Musical accompaniment too! - Reagan Republican

Say Who?

“
OBAMA RATED 5th BEST PRESIDENT IN OUR HISTORY
Washington, Lincoln, Coolidge, Reagan, and—  Obama?

From a total of 44 US Presidents: Obama is rated as the 5th best President ever! The A&M's Public Relations Office released the following statement, "...after only 5 years in office, Americans have rated President Obama the 5th best President ever."

The details according to TEXAS A&M

#1. Reagan & Lincoln tied for first,

#2. Twenty three presidents tied for second,

#3. Seventeen other presidents tied for third,

#4. Jimmy Carter came in fourth, and

#5. Obama came in fifth!

This appears to be totally reasonable . . . . .

Mayo

Mexico and Mayonnaise
(México y mayonesa)

Res Ipsa Loquitor

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England . In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico , which was to be he next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York . This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico . But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York .. The ship hit an iceberg and sank. The people of Mexico , who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as - Sinko De Mayo.

Muhammed Discovers America

Just before they invented baseball

“
It is extremely important to know how Islam began in the US. There are historical accounts according to which the Muslims preceded Columbus, who is said to have discovered the US. Some documents and accounts indicate that Muslim seafarers were the first to reach the US. The bottom line is that Islam played a part in the establishment and development of the US. -CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad

I guess that explains what happened to the Lost Colonists; beheaded. And I can see Achmud Revere riding through  Boston' streets warning "Heads down and asses up for evening prayer!"  Sheesh

Islamos seem to be taking a page from  Leonard Jefferies's  Black Afro-Centric history, or "the school of let's-make-shit-up."  Now that they've infiltrated the White House can it be long before Oliver Stone.makes "PLATOON 2004? "

Immigration History from Mr. Peabody

Imagine a new immigration policy
We need to look beyond strict definitions of legal and illegal.
Fanciful New Age History
because ...?

“

Today, we are much more rigid about immigrants. We divide newcomers into two categories: legal or illegal, good or bad. We hail them as Americans in the making, or brand them as aliens fit for deportation. That framework has contributed mightily to our broken immigration system and the long political paralysis over how to fix it.

We don't need more categories, but we need to change the way we think about categories. We need to look beyond strict definitions of legal and illegal. To start, we can recognize the new birds of passage, those living and thriving in the gray areas. We might then begin to solve our immigration challenges. [We need to look beyond strict definitions of legal and illegal.]

"Today, we are much more rigid about immigrants. We divide newcomers into two categories: legal or illegal, good or bad."

Huh?

This recounting of American history immediately reminded me of Mr. Peabody, the dog who took boy Sherman into the Way Back Machine for cockeyed versions of history on the Rocky and Bullwinkle show [sample]. Only, there's no humor.

I'll guess that Robert Soro learned from a Howard Zinn textbook, and was beat up during recess as a yoot.

"We don't need more categories" is dead on.  Legal and illegal do the job.
