COPD BLOWS

People are always asking. "Say, Rodge ..
.

I first heard of this harmonica trick 40+ years ago  on the Mike Douglas Show. At the time I was was a 2-3 pack a day smoker. When I quit (for good) in 1997 I was 4 packs.  Fast forward to diagnosed COPD.  Three years ago, remembering that Mike Douglas Show advice, I bought a harmonica and set about using a You Tube "Play Mr. Tambourine Man" primer to get started.  Using that, and a Fitbit to monitor my steps (and calories) I was soon enough 30 years old again.  Seriously.  Alas, for various and sundry reasons I lapsed to the point where I was sent to a pulmonary rehab 3 days/week. Worked like magic and after 3 months I was back in the pink (and my insurance was used).  However, by that time my knees had suffered the slings and arrows of time, and .... you know. GAH!
Blood OXY
Things got so bad that, what the hell,  lets do the harmonica again.  After just a week here is todays blood/oxygen level after doing *I wish all the girls were like ... for 10 minutes. Yesterday I logged a 100 Blood Oxy. Holy Fn Sht!. This morning a 97.  (The highest I got during pulmonary rehab was 97. FWIW.)

You're welcome.

CONGRESSMAN SEES 'DRUDGE-LIKE' GOVERNMENT SITE FOR TERROR TIPS...

copyright © 2017 DrudgeReportArchives.com. All Rights Reserved.

This Drudge page is 26 years old. The design has seen few changes since its debut in 1997. It remains entirely written in unscripted HTML, with a mostly monochromatic color scheme of black boldface monospaced font text on a plain white background. (Wiki)

I know what you're saying; "The point is?."

The point is to send a message to every GD web site and cable provider in the freaking world.

Find a design you like, then fire all but a few maintenance programmers who will spend the next three years doing nothing but fixing every bug.  Every three years you can add two things for every five you junk.

I'll use FIOS as my example.  Rarely a day, and never a week, goes by that I don't find some new, irritating splash screen, DVR protocol change, or other crap that makes me say bad words, sometimes when my grand kiddies are about.  Take a lesson from Drudge!  He is now the most visited news website in the world.  When he began, he made his bones by, somehow, being able to tap into the Newsweek (Wa Post) computer and find this embargoed story.  From that point on Bill Clinton was toast.  And there were others.  Today, however, most of Drudge content are leaks by other news blogs and agencies. etc. But his clout continues to grow.  Why? Because we know exactly what every link does. We know how to find old, archived stories, and wear comfortable, old, slippers the whole while.

If  the Drudge Report fell into the hands of, say, FIOS  programmers; it would start asking for passwords, have embedded videos playing, and have more bling than Kim Kardashian's labia.

PS.  Off hand I can think of two other high volume sites that have leaned that lesson; Free Republic, and Bad Blue.

iPAD AIR 2

APPLE ORDER

My Apple AIR finally  succumbed to screen cracks and battery failure, so and opted to get an  AIR 2.  Bought one for MoSup a year ago and was impressed with some of the features.  My real  gripe with my old machine was lack of memory.  As a life long Microsoft guy, which culture allows, even encourages, upgrading memory, I paid scant attention to its importance.  This time around I  went for the whole 128GB, and bought the cellular option as well, which gives me automatic WiFi access anywhere.  Amazon  prices ranged from $450 -$589 for recons, and were shipped by the owner.   I checked Apple and found  a recon price of $530, but they come with  Apple guarantee.  When it came I was surprised to find what appeared to be a  brand new, sealed box,  iPad.  If this was recon, then it's a spectacular recon.  FWIW, I would do it again.  And the 128 GB is like having a girlfriend who can last all night.

Winning Whine

                                                           Wine

When the old man was doing Christmas you could (if of age) drink soda or Manhattan's [Jim Beam, a pinch of sweet vermouth and lots of ice]  That's it. The only people drinking were me, him and my b-i-l.  Now, I've had to change the bar menu.  Cater to kids, and their spouses, all of whom drink.  Wine.  That's all. Wine.

So, no Dec 23rd I told my sommelier to put together a case of wines, mostly white, with some red Argentinean wine, which I'd heard good things about.  The jury is in.  The overwhelming winner (based on MoSup telling me it was the "best ever," and all the girls thought so too) is Moscato D'Asti.  I didn't try it, but since it's made in Asti (Italy), I'll guess it tastes like spumante without the bubbles.  No matter.  I like it when she drinks wine (which is seldom), so will be buying more of it.  You should too, especially if you're single and having a party.

You're welcome.

FIOS MOBILE

 CALL ME "SUNSHINE"

Last week new FIOS equipment, installed using various FIOS "SMART FIX" APPs, had us so fkd-up that even after several hours-long, on-line sessions with various India Indians, things were even worse.  Nahoptipauli agreed to send a technician (with the admonition, "you will be charged if the fault is yours").

Next day, the guy was here for 4 hours.  And, while he fixed most things, when it came to allowing the FIOS MOBILE app to record shows, or watch recordings, he threw hands-up and said, "give it some time to catch up with all the changes." STG. Five days later, and guess what .... Nada.   However, I am here to actually tout the Mobile APP.

FIOS claims they have like 100 million
on-demand movies, and this app lets me scroll (endlessly) through all of them.  I can watch it now, or bookmark it. Even better, the titles show the Rotten Tomatoes rating, something I put great store in. Plus! I can do fun things, like change the channels on my wife's TV from Home & Garden to "Virgin Whores from Babylon," while sitting in the dentist's chair.

There, I've said something positive about FIOS. We were not charged.

Poo-Pourri Magic

STUFF THAT WORKS

I bought Poo-Poo Pourri as soon as I heard about it several years ago.  We have a powder room off the den, and I noticed guests were loathe to use it because, I guess, they feared leaving with a noxious odor wafting about their persons.  And, over the years it's seems to have worked.  But there's another use for it.  I'm always finding leftovers, especially meats in the fridge, that have maybe a tiny odor.  You know.  I had to throw them away.  But wait.  I've found that a mist of Poo-Poo Pourri left  them smelling like just off-the-cow/pig.   Saves a lot of entertainment $$.

You're welcome

Mountain Gas

DIY

This is just the g'damdist thing I ever seed!   I just stumbled upon Mountain Men—this episode.  The whole thing is so compelling that I'm recording the series, and watched 5 yesterday. But here's what blew my mind.  The gasifier.  Here's what blows my mind more:
Wood gasifiers can power either spark ignition engines, where 100% of the normal fuel can be replaced with little change to the carburation, or in a diesel engine, feeding the gas into the air inlet that is modified to have a throttle valve, if it didn't have it already. On diesel engines the diesel fuel is still needed to ignite the gas mixture, so a mechanically regulated diesel engine's "stop" linkage and probably "throttle" linkage must be modified to always give the engine a little bit of injected fuel (Often under the standard idle per-injection volume).
Wood can be used to power cars with ordinary internal combustion engines if a wood gasifier is attached. This was quite popular during World War II in several European, African and Asian countries because the war prevented easy and cost-effective access to oil. In more recent times, wood gas has been suggested as a clean and efficient method to heat and cook in developing countries, or even to produce electricity when combined with an internal combustion engine. (Wikipedia)
How the hell did I live this long without even hearing about this?  Or, even worse, what if it turns out that I once built one myself?  Ahem. I'll guess that a goodly number of you were way ahead of me on the gasifier, and on Mountain Men too.  All the characters are something else, but Tom is the one who fills me with the most wonderment about his skill and determination.  And he lives with a good woman, too.  I think RAK could qualify for inclusion in this series.

Calming the Seas

Playing Catch-up

In the past, and we're talking 14 years here, a sudden sparsity of blog posting was due to miasma.  Now it's due, largely, by having so much to rail about that I don't know where to begin.  Okay, there is a certain miasma, perhaps, in that I really can't see a way to to reverse our country's slide into .. into something that was unimaginable even 20 years ago.  Where tyranny by a minority trumps the constitution and half the population applauds.  I reached a point where I was so filled with hatred for anyone I saw as part of the problem, aka anyone who was not apologetic for ever voting for any Democrat, that, not only was I miserable, but I made anyone around me .... erm, uncomfortable.  Odd as it seems, a turning point came when MoSup and I began watching the Blue Bloods series.

Every episode rang true
—well, except for the Black mayor who is not only open to suggestion, but shows a good deal of common sense to boot.  There are no Democrat politicians in my experience who have those qualities (but it is the liberal wet dream, as witness the Black President in the 24 series, who, with the verisimilitude rating of minus-6, is more Thomas Jefferson than Brok Obama).

Anyway, at the end of each episode the Reagan family get together for a family meal, a wonderful model for any family.  It's here that — one reader here called it the "Greek Chorus"— they toss around current events, ideas and philosophies.  I felt good after every episode; I think because so many of the values I grew up with were in evidence.

I did that video a month ago.  That's how far behind I am.  Maybe its the cork in the monkeys ass.

Mahjong for the mind

You Look Mahvelous

Luminosity is the best cognitive gymnasium I've run across, but our subscription ran out, and since it was a gift (free) I'm loathe to now pay for it.  I do cross word puzzles, and do MS Spades, Hearts. etc—but they really offer no challenge.  Mahjong on the other hand is interesting. I soon learned to master every level of Microsoft Mahjong, and then started doing the daily challenge.  This is where you get three (mostly timed) puzzles.  The lighting tiles are my greatest personal  challenge, because I have to control the fear factor as the clock ticks down and I've yet to uncover the detonator, so to speak.  For those who also play this challengee, the June 13 Lightning Tiles (Easy) and Match Attack (Expert) are driving me crazy.  You?

And there's this.

A few weeks ago I was suddenly  unable to complete any of them.  WTF?  It turns out that while I thought I was okay, I was in fact coming down from my poison ivy steroids and my body was all fkd-up. That's what happens.  Plus, I couldn't hit a ball over the short right foreld wall!  So Mahjong acts as  an early warning sign.  That's what I wanted to say.  I recommend  it.  You're welcome. Now where was I?  Oh, right.  One cup of suger and two cups of  cake flour.

Fasta Pasta Review

            Techno Thrills

Fasta Pasta

Last week I watched an America's Food Kitchen review of microwave pasta cookers.  The winner (and least expensive)  was the Fasta Pasta. Adam Ried (the show's equipment tester) commented, " ... it really works ... 12 minute pasta that's perfect."  So ordered one from Amazon for around $15.  Just used it.  Thumbs up baby.  We eat a lot of pasta and it takes 20 minutes just to get water to boil on the stove, so clap clap.  You're welcome.

PS- this video I found was posted in 2008, so it's not a new product.

Poor Man's Soo Vede

            Techno Thrills
Poor Man's Soo Vede

Total Time: 10 hours

Active Time: 30 mins -- mostly calibrating

Makes: 2-6 servings

I’ve pondered buying expensive sous vide equipment, but found I can get the job done quite well with appliances I already have that would cost under $100 —a good quality digital thermometer (ideally one with a probe on a wire) and an electric wok or skillet with an old fashioned analog temperature control.

The analog control is essential. A digital control with low-medium-high like is found in crock pots is not going to do it. The old fashioned dial control on your mom’s electric skillet —the one with that curious metal spike coming out of it — is the kind you need.

The magic of this technique is once you’ve brought your food to cooking temperature (say 145-50) using a precise digital thermometer, you should be able to get your cheap, simple analog control to maintain it at that temperature with accuracy that is plenty good enough for excellent results. (PoorMan's Soo Vede cont.)

I've been wanting to try soo vede for awhile, but about the cheapest you can get into it is $100 for what is prolly crap.  Then I found Poor Man's Soo Vede and gave it a try.  We've had that Rival skillet for years and hardly ever used it. The pic is pretty much explanatory, but bottom line is that the result was quite satisfactory.  I let it cook soo vede for about 12 hours and had just one complaint.  I like my soup a little hotter than 140°, but 2 minutes in the microwave fixed that right up.

You're welcome.

OXO GOOD GRIPS R GOOD

  STUFF THAT WORKS

OXO

I didn't buy any of the above pictured items because they were made by OXO, but over the years I've discovered that they work like new 5-10 years after I got them.  Slowly the name OXO sunk in as being a good thing. Take that dishwasher brush (you fill the handle with soap).  We had two or three of the cheap models that worked just long enough to prove their value, but not long enough to celebrate a 2nd birthday.  We've used the OXO model for 4-5 years now, and only replaced the brush head twice.  It never leaks soap; never breaks.  So, if you're looking for a kitchen gadget, and not sure which one to choose, go with OXO; you shan't be disappointed.  You're welcome.

ASIDE I use the mandolin almost every day, and it's still as sharp as it was on day one; but for godsake, by some steel mesh gloves.

Ryobi Pressure Washer

TECHNO THRILLS

Waterdown, ON
Best pressure washer under $200 I've seen
June 15, 2013
5.0
5 out of 5

After going through 2 Karchers in the last two years, and reading the reviews on all the other under $200 Pressure washers available at the major retailers, that all look like the came from the same factory in China, I decided to give this Ryobi a try.
Pretty impressive machine so far. And cheap considering what you get, very good quality parts and well engineered, very close to a good commercial gas powered machine.
I like that it comes with 3 nozzles, and everything has a place on this machine. An actual detergent tank rather than some cheap plastic tube.
The all-aluminum pump sold it for me, I hope it lasts longer than what I've experienced with others that have the plastic pumps, that ... Read More

I bought this Ryobi because this guy's review is identical to what I would write.  Same experience, but add along the way two of those blue machines that are even crappier than Karcher.  Don't ask.  Anyway, I wish this was an American product because it's fit, finish, and engineering are the best of anything I've purchased since, I don't know—the Oxo mandolin I suppose.  Zero water leaks.  The sound of the spray is louder than the sound of the pump.  Metal frame.  Brass fittings. QUALITY!  Even if you don't have a use for a pressure washer, get this Ryobi for the pure joy of owning something that's virtually flawless.  Free shipping from Home Depot.
