Snakes in the tall grass

This is a tough one.  On one hand I feel for the cat, but the predator is, well, into predation.  I hate anonymous slash and burn artists, but appreciate the Web'spromise of anonymity, for the very reason that lawmakers hate it.   Poison penners are usually democrats, ugh, but CEO Chris Tolles also manages to stink up.

"We do not just give up people's privacy," said the Web site's CEO Chris Tolles. "We're very, very careful about that."

But Tolles said the discussions are not necessarily a license to run people through the mud. "If there is a line that's been crossed from a libel standpoint — and it seems reasonable — we do, in fact, cooperate with the courts."

Proud Mary said it right, in fewer words.  "One to watch."

I post as Alear, but my real name is known to Rodg. I have never once considered myself completely anony.

So let's postulate: Suppose I were to post the following: "Hanky must be shot." And let's suppose the authorities came after Rodg, asking who said that.

Would you give them the info? Why? Why not?

I'd say sure, give it up, ask for their license first I guess. There is no anony on the Net. Besides, I'd get off, coz everyone knows I'd rather poison her.

Damn, there's not enough information here or in the news story to know if there's any merit to the lawsuit.

But western society has become so frivolously litigious that it's ruining the whole 'life, liberty and pursuit of happiness' thing. My first impulse therefore is to wonder if the Judge (not named in the news story)is also a Lawyer like the plaintiff, and thus in a sort of conflict of interest. You know, all those shyster lawyer types sticking together and making meaningful tort reform a fantasy they will never allow.

If I'm wrong, and the Leshers were wrongly smeared, then they have my sympathy. The Topix website people should be apologizing or something. Were they moderating the forum involved?

But if my suspicions are right...
My Name is Andrew Rondeau, I live in Canada, and the lawyers can kiss my ass...

BTW, I have no prollem whatever with people commenting under a pseudonym, as long as they're not attacking others, and their values. That rarely happens here, and when it does, it's always from a coward. As someone who's been audited 5 years running by the IRS - I'm not saying there's anything political in it, even though I've been clean every time - I understand the desire to use a handle. Who uses their real name on the intertubes? It's an invitation to solicitation by Nigerians, and Russians too. Don't forget the Russians.

You're right about the cowards, Rodger. The same peeps who sling uglies and insults on the net would never do so face to face. At least, I doubt it. I heard a preacher once suggest a way to cool a neighborhood (or wherever gossip)- while they're into their spiel, simply state, "May I quote you on that?" heh heh ;-p
