Obama: Mandate is Not a Tax

Joint Committee on Taxation Chief of Staff Tom Barthold Item: During last Sunday's television blitz, Obama forcefully objected to statements that the mandate to buy health insurance was a tax increase.  (watch). Item:   Under questioning from Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), Barthold said the IRS would "take you to court and undertake normal collection proceedings." Item: This wasn't persuasive to the committee -- which rejected an amendment from Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) to eliminate the individual mandate (Sen. Olympia Snowe voting with Democrats to keep the mandate). Item, Ensign asked for and received a handwritten memo from Barthold (copied above) “ PS. In addition ... ” It's not only treated as a tax. but failure to file can cost you an additional  $100,000 fine and 5 years in prison for tax evasion.  So what is it, Mr. Zero? Are you a liar, or grossly unprepared and incompetent? Or both? Ball's in your court.
