The cables are kinked. Data moves in 1s and 0s, the 0s flow well because they are round. The 1s tend to get logjammed in the kinks in the cables over time so be sure to staighten and hang your cables overnight at least once a year.
When I was installing cable modems I actually hd people ask me if I would come back and they would pay me to do that for them.

When I worked maint, we had an old computer which got slower as time wore on. At one point I advised them that we needed to use smaller fonts to conserve space on th hard drive. dang if some of the guys didn't buy it.
