The Soul of Sowell

Randomly selected from Thomas Sowell

  •   Intolerance may not promote progress but it can promote survival. An intolerant Islamic world may outlast the Western world that seems ready to tolerate anything, including the undermining of its own fundamental values and threats to its continued existence.
  • The vile people who picket the funerals of American soldiers killed in action are far away enough from the mourners not to be heard. It is media attention that magnifies their sick message.
  • When the Federal Reserve cites statistics to claim that there is not much evidence of inflation, we need to keep in mind that the statistics they rely on exclude food and energy prices. The cost of living is no sweat if you can do without electricity and food.
  • When political commentators from the Fox News Channel had books whose sales would normally make the New York Times' non-fiction best-seller list, the New York Times changed the rules for putting books on that list. Thus best-selling political books by Mike Huckabee and Dick Morris appeared last Sunday on a more obscure list of miscellaneous personal advice and how-to books, such as "Weight Watchers New Complete Cookbook."
  • The vocabulary of the political left is fascinating. For example, it is considered to be "materialistic" and "greedy" to want to keep what you have earned. But it is "idealistic" to want to take away what someone else has earned and spend it for your own political benefit or to feel good about yourself. [More from Obama goes deep, sets new record]

So you won't think I'm a Thomas Sowell sycophant, there is this from his list that I will quibble with.

Don't mention "municipal golf courses" to me. It sends my blood pressure up through the roof. What earthly excuse is there for spending the taxpayers' money subsidizing a golf course? Politicians can't even invoke "the poor," as they do when trying to justify other government boondoggles.

Without publicly financed golf courses, how is the common man supposed to own a Bentley, and live on Nob Hi --- Whoa!  *throws chilled Martini in face*  It damn sure is easy to fall into that trap. Good thing our leaders stalwartly refuse to succumb to  that siren song, "free stuff that makes us equal and more happier"

Sowell is a rare combination of Milton Friedman and Will Rodgers in one person. I loved his powning of Francis Piven in a conference before a live audience where he bodyslammed her for pandering to his race. Piven, by the way, should be horsewhipped and deported to where she can work her socialist/anarchist juju on some third world hellhole instead of trying to turn the USA into one.

Tiger Woods is responsible for turning golf into a 4 letter word for the average duffer.

I really, really like this guy. I think he has sat in for Rush a time or two.

RICK - I think you're thinking about George Mason's Walter Williams. I get them confused too; all economic professors look alike to me. :)

Dr. Walter E. Williams is the guy who subs for Rush occasionally. He too is a special guy. He was the head of the George Mason Econ Dept., which had two Nobel prize winners on staff, and this guy was their boss! He has the knack of turning complex economics into little parables that make the point clear as a bell.
What really twists the Libs' panties is that both Sowell and Williams are black, and conservative as all get out, and they do not hesitate to twist the knife after they skewer some pet Lib viewpoint.
I've heard him crush some Libs who call with some bleat about economic justice with something like the following, paraphrased:
Lib caller – Taxing the rich is economic justice.
Walter E. Williams – No it’s not, it’s theft.
L - How’s that? It’s the law and they don’t take it all, but a percentage that’s fair and the rich can pay..
W. – Let’s suppose you go to an ATM and withdraw $100. You feel a poke in the ribs and it’s a guy with a gun who demands the cash. How does that make you feel?
L – I’d be angry.
W – OK, now suppose you’re angry and you plead hardship, it’s your last $100. The gun guy has sympathy and only takes $40 of the $100. Now how would you feel?
L – It’s still not right.
W – Ok, how is that different than the IRS taking 40% of your income?
L - Well, the IRS does it by law, not with a gun.
W – Really. Don’t file or pay your taxes and see if some guys with guns don’t come looking for you.
L – Yeah, but taxes are by law written by elected representatives in a majority rule democracy.
W – OK, let’s go back to the ATM. You take out $100, feel a gun in your ribs and hear a demand for $40. You turn around and there are six guys with guns. They’re in the majority. That still doesn’t make it right. Taxation of wages that you gave some of the limited hours of your life to earn is theft and tyranny.
L - Dead silence....

The only thing I don't like about Thomas Sowell is his age. I want him to live much much longer.

Both Sowell and Williams have been smacking down libs for years. Hell, both of 'em are on Milton Friedman's 'Free to Choose' series during the discussions.

I try to read all articles by both of 'em every week. And no, it's not because I feel 'guilty' (ala Piven). It's because they're the two economists I respect the most since our beloved Freidman died.
