On the road to ....

The way It was The way It is

SCROLL

This is about the 4th time in 10 years that I've invoked Shelby Foote on our "changing," now toxic, culture. This pertains to The Civil War, but it's just a small piece of the S**t Fly pie.

Read the last of the Declaration "Free and independent states...." There was no union, it was a loose affiliation of nation states just like Weimar, Austria, Prussia, etc. The union was made by Lincoln, as his counterpart Von Bizmark proclaimed "by blood and iron". Lincoln was the polar opposite of Mr. Jeffersons intentions.

One of these days I'm going to read again "The Articles of the Confederation and Perpetual Union". I'm pretty sure the idea of a loose confederacy similar to the European models is nowhere to be found in those pages. Of course I could be wrong about that as it's been years.

All that's over now.

Hahahaha. As your Southern correspondent, I bring contrary tidings.

1. Everyone down here openly agrees that Barry0 is proof the outcome of the Civil War deserves reconsideration, being good for neither North nor South.

2. At an enchanting midnight Christmas Eve service, the Presbyterian minister told a nice story about an overnight truce caused by the birth of a general's son. Very appropriate for the occasion. But as he wrapped up this invocation to peace, for the 1st time in my life, I heard someone refer to the Northern Army as "The Enemy."

All my Southern friends laugh at this story, because it's funny, but real. And they appreciate me, as a Yankee, for understanding that.

If you want to really muddy the waters, we can talk about the vast difference between "Federal" and "North". Few people understand the chasm. A good place to start is in NYC in '63 when the New Yorkers wanted nothing to do with Federal control. To show their repulsion to this breech of their states rights, those benevolent Yankees lynched a bunch of blacks. Lincoln responded by sending an army made up of European imigrants to fire on them with shot and cannon. It was NOT north vs. south.

Huh? Irish mobs looted and murdered, burned and raped their way through town, lynched a handful of Blacks for some reason and got shot for their trouble. In the end Tammany ruled for decades and the "protesters" got exactly what they deserved, corrupt government and the distrust and ridicule of the nation. Substitute the Negro for Irish and Watts for NYC and play the game again in 100 years. Too bad Lincoln wasn't around for that one too. That's what I see.
