My father grew watermelons (2-3 hundred acres at a time) when I was in high school. In those days folks wanted big melons in the thirty pound range. We primarily grew Charleston Grays and Jubilees and those big melons were so good. I just can't bring myself to eat these little seedless things they call watermelons today that aren't much bigger than a grapefruit and rarely have much flavor compared to the old melons of the past. I know, who cares? Just brought back memories.

Best melons are the ones you steal from the patch around midnight.

My grandfather used to tell this story of a friend of his who had a watermelon patch back in the 30's or so, and one melon in the patch was just huge. He walked out there and checked on it several times a day, and had visions of county fair ribbons in his mind.

One day as he was making his rounds, he found a feller sitting there, with that melon split open and having eaten the heart, was pretty content with himself.

"Say, that looks like a pretty good melon, is it?"

The guy says, "Oh my, this is the best melon I do believe I've ever tasted. I just ate my fill of the center, I couldn't eat another bite!"

So the farmer levels his shotgun at the guy and says, "Well, that's a shame, since now that you've ruined my prize melon, you're gonna eat the whole thing."

So the guy would eat on the melon a while, then turn to the side and stick his finger down his throat, then get back to it.

I'm still not convinced the melon thief didn't get the best end of that transaction.

That's what my father said. He used to steal them from South Jersey patches when he was a kid.
