I have avoided TJ's for years. Too many old hippies, and they keep stopping selling things that I really liked.

And they are over-priced.

I miss the days when they mainly sold brand close-outs at deep discounts.

"And they are over-priced."- subjective

I have rarely (if ever) bought anything that wasn't top quality from TJ's. Nothing get's thrown out; nothing is left uneaten. The greatest disappointment I can think of is the spinach and kale pie, and that only because I can't get it to brown properly- and I've tried a dozen times!

Best commercially made mayonnaise. Even "Cook's Illustrated" agreed.

TJs ? Meh ! Good's Red Label potato chips from Adamstown, PA. are unbeatable. Get the big red and white can so you never come up short for those late night crunchy fixes. Trust me.

Sterzing's Potato Chips, made in Iowa: when Garrison Keillor (whom I can't stand) does his bit about "Powdermilk Biscuits" and says "Look for the package with the dark stains…", that was probably inspired by Sterzing's, which used to come in a bag that showed the oil seeping from the chips. They seemed to have been deep-fried in 30 wt., and their fans (who don't pronounce the "g" in "Sterzing's") used to brag that the chips were so thick and heavy that there were only 2 or 3 chips per bag!

Now they come in a foil bag, and I haven't eaten them in years so I don't know if the chips are still the same.

TJs is OK for most things, but they are lacking in the meat department.

In the Annapolis area the Navy Commissary and Sam's Club have good bargains. My Butcher and More in the Clock Tower Center on Forrest Drive has/can get anything but is uber-expensive. The best I've seen in years though is the Hockers/G&E in Ocean View Delaware.

Yeah, Trader Joes has some decent products. Believe it or not, but they make some nice candied pecans (which you can get with and without a little dash of cayenne) which we like on salads.

But OMFG, if I want to go to TJs, I have to endure the hippies and schoolteachers (but I repeat myself). I might be able to figure out how to candy those pecans myself and thereby avoid the hippie-schoolteacher. It can't be that hard, can it?
