The USS Jimmy Carter is bad enough

Hillary Clinton plans to attend the launching ceremony of a warship. And not just any warship, but the USS Gabrielle Giffords, named for the leftist congresswoman who was shot in the head by another leftist nut job. [FULL]

Just as well. The Littoral Combat Ship class was a mistake. They are all worthless in the Navy. Maybe the Coast Guard can use them.

Used to be Navy ships were named after naval heroes and battles. She never served in the military, never mind the Navy; she was a victim, not a hero, and had a forgettable career in the legislature.
The whole business stinks to high heaven, and if I were a sailor, I'd be embarrassed to admit I served on that monument to gynecology.

I long for the days when carriers were named for historic battles and ships, when cruisers were named for cities, and smaller ships were named for people who were American heroes of the past. Today's practice of naming carriers for presidents, one of whom is still living, sucks.
The USS Murtha and the USS Carter are abominations as well, but not as offensive as naming the Giffords after a minor league Dem bitch. (All female Dems are bitches by definition - nothing personal)
Lose tradition and we lose our history.

The navy named an oiler the USS Harvey Milk in 2016 and you can't go much lower than that. Thankfully I served on ships with honorable names. I feel for the folks serving in the social justice club that the US military has had thrust upon it. I'm praying that with with the new leadership there is hope for the future.

Esteve, I'd forgotten about the Harvey Milk. Yes, that's an atrocity. My memory is a little shaky, but didn't he have something to do with encourage Jim Jones, who later murdered about 900 people on Guyana?

I wonder if Trump will name a ship the USS Steve Scalise, after the Louisiana congressman who was shot today. Scalise, unlike Giffords, was not shot by a random nutcase, but by a man who was out to kill as many REPUBLICANS as he could.

Harry Truman hated the Marine Corps, and the Navy. He wanted an Army/Airforce as there was no reason to have a navy in the nuclear age. It was not by chance that Bill Clinton changed the proposed name of a carrier and named it for an old half wit cannon cocker. -Anymouse

The linked article asks "If you had to name something after Gabrielle Giffords, what would it be?". Since she was a blue dog from Arizona, and a proponent of immigration enforcement, how about naming the Arizona section of the border wall after her.

This ship has great gun control, though. Laser designated or autonomous targeting will allow good groups at 5 miles and 220 rounds/minute with the 57mm gun.

Sounds like a good Coast Guard ship.

Skoonj, Harvey Milk was the first openly homosexual politician elected in California. He and the mayor of San Francisco were shot and killed by a fellow City Supervisor. How that rates the honor of a ship being named after you, I don't know?

Esteve, yes I remember that. I was, however, referring to something earlier. Rev. Jim Jones set up shop in San Francisco, and got support from the political left there. My memory is a little blurry here, but I think Milk was one of the leftist politicians who encouraged people to join his "church".

Jones moved his shop to Guyana. Eventually he had the whole bunch, about 900 people, commit suicide. That's where the expression "drinking the Kool Aid" came from. There was a member of Congress on the scene that day, investigating complaints from constituents. He tried to escape but was gunned down by Jones people at the airport.

Do you remember any support of Jones by Milk?
