inscrutable

''He said he would veto any legislation to hold up deal and warned the United States was sending 'mixed signals' by going after a company from the Middle East when nothing was said when a British company was in charge... Lawmakers, he said, must 'step up and explain why a middle eastern company is held to a different standard.'  [Oh that'll be hard.]'' - Associated Press

''ON THE FACE OF IT,  this is so stupid that I have to believe there's something strategic going on that he can't, or won't reveal.'' - Mother Superior
I'm with MS on this one.  It can't just be payback for the UAE's cooperating so grandly in the war against Iraq, can it?  The real kicker for me is Hillary Clinton getting on her high horse over this, as though we forgot that her husband did all he could to turn the Long Beach Naval Station property over to  China Overseas Shipping Co., aka Red China.

I know what would make me feel good right now -- 96 hours of anarchy, after which everyone still alive is pardoned.

I just heard Bill Frist on the radio, and he told his host that, should President Bush veto legislation blocking the port deal, that a veto override is possible.

I'm beginning to ask, where do I get one of them "Impeach Bush" bumper stickers?!

Along MS's line of thinking, I'd say Bush is putting the Dem's on "front street" by placing them in a position -to go on record- w/their sudden concern for our safety; having to admit a ME country owning this company may not be trustworthy.

OTOH, why should this situation be any different from all the other instances where Libs say one thing one day and deny it the next day - and it's never questioned in the MSM?

So, I'm still at a loss. Yes, I heard Rush today, but UAE's is still and Islamic nation and that is truly our first concern and worry...IMO. 'Just can't stop thinking that way, especially regarding all the bulls**t over the comic strips. It's all so much crap!!!! Yikes.... joyce

shit... impeach bush? are you crazy?

what the frick to i care if a company from the UAE buys a company from Britain that transfers containers in some 6 US ports...

the security is the same damn thing...

the insanity of the MSM and the DNC must be contageous.

President Bush now has Chuck Schumer kissing Halliburton ass, and Sen. Clinton, Gov. Corzine, etc., making stereotypical judgments about Arab Companies...

LOL

Cannot wait for Corzine to be sued by the ACLU for his bigotry towards the ARAB community...

The who thing is laughable.

Bush looks like a reasoned, objective, professional with no fear, while the Demonuts look like racist idiots (they will never be taken seriously on Defense anyhow...)

Malkin and a bunch of reactionary wimps on the Conservative side should chill out.

No attacks on US SOIL SINCE 9-11... It is no Surprise with this Administration...

Afraid of UAE cargo carrier companies? No way...

By the way, a number of these emotional wimps on the Conservative side who are suddenly crying about the UAE Port Story, freaked out about the VP's Hunting Accident.

I would not trust them with anything.

Birdshot...

I find it hard to get worked up over this.
Mebbe I'm an idiot here, but this is really about the _financing_ of the ports. My impression is that the property still belongs to the US and the day-to-day operations will still be done by American workers - through the Union that represents them.

As I understand it, this is about who gets the profit check at the end of the month - not who does the hiring, firing, and security.

Paranoia about Dubai ports deal is needless
February 21 2006 02:00

The current furore in Washington about the takeover of P&O, the UK-based ports operator, by Dubai Ports World says more about the United States Congress than the United Arab Emirates. The bluster about national security conceals one of the uglier faces of US protectionism - the one with the slightly racist tinge.

Rodger,
I can't understand this one either. Bush has had some incredibly poor legislation (think Education bill, Campaign Finance Reform, etc.) cross his desk over the years, and never, not even once has he even threatened to veto but now he's practically barking out a threat to us that he'll veto any challenge from the legislature. WTF? There are three options here:

1) He really believes this is a good idea. If that's true, then he's as dumb as the liberals have been saying.
2) There really are strong ties betw Bush family and the Saudis and this is some sort of payback. (Or someone close to Bush stands to make a great deal of money from the sale.)
3) This is grandstanding cooked up by Rove. At the last minute Bush will back down but not before flushing out the LibDems, on record, into a much more pro-security stance. If so, it's brilliant, but it still pisses me off to be "played."

The fact that we're even considering these conspiracy options troubles me. This is as close to a political "no brain'er" as I've seen in many years and I don't think we're hearing the truth. Occam's razor be damned. I think there's something more to this than what we're hearing.

Whatever. I don't think ANY foreign nation should be running our ports or any of our businesses which present a security threat. British, Canadian, UAE, Cambodia, whatever, but (and this is for you, Anonymous coward) ESPECIALLY MUSLIM COUNTRIES. It's not racism, it's reasoned thinking. They have a marked disdain for our culture and the UAE plays both sides, the West and the terrorists. It is bordering (no pun intended) on suicide to have those with (at best) no loyalty to this country or (at worst) active hatred make decisions about our lives.

I've said it before, I'm a lukewarm Bush supporter but only so long as he defends this country. This is f'ing insane. If this ownership change stands, I'm staying home come election day because it'll be clear it won't make one damned bit of difference which party or candidate wins.

OTLS (on the lighter side) That photoshop is HIDEOUS! OMG, just looking at that face makes my skin crawl far worse than any gigantic spider on a toilet paper roll! :D If that's your purpose...job well done! joyce

LOL

JON, get a grip man...

did you even study the issue before claiming it is a no brainer?

they won't be 'running' our ports to begin with...

just taking ownership of a British Company, that is currently managing cargo on 6 of them...

same everything, security, control, etc...

besides, Dubai - is not the UAE, it is ONE of the seven emirates in the UAE federation...

LOL

even more insanity from JT...

It isn't Republicans in Maryland who are telling WallMart how much health care to provide their employees...

Nor is it Republicans trying to legalize Gay Marriage...

This is the kind of poster, that stays at home, and is stunned with the SC taking his property away from him, and having Congress pass massive tax increases...

Pure insanity...

the kind of which, places ugly monsters like Hillary in Office...

Lets see, the DNC provided Carter...

The Republicans Reagan...

LOL

Sure, no difference there...

pathetic

I admit joining the WTF r u thinking crowd right off the bat. Call it knee-jerk reaction, call it I just cant trust towelheads syndrome, but that was my first thought. Now, I am not too sure. I trust W. I think we all need to trust him, and let this thing play out. And as Tony Snow said tonight, if they did try anything, how hard would it be to wipe the entire UAE out, and it would even be an entire days work?

I dunno. Maybe that is why I am an arm chair critic and not a politician....
I say kill them all and let Allah sort them out!

See, here is why I am so damned confused.

Billary is against it.
Peanut Boy is for it.

Circular logic error. Cannot process.

Bill wouldn't know, nor would he care, but on your map that large area just above the word "beach" is Pier Echo. That's where countless numbers of Marines embarked over the years for voyages to the Pacific Theater, Korea and Viet Nam. The moorage to the left was home to three or four carriers at a time along with the newly recommissioned battleship New Jersey in 1968. The Queen Mary was tied up on the east side during the same period.

The place ought to be a National Monument, not a Red Chinee beachhead.
