U.S.S. Reagan

A thing of beauty

Seeing the USS Reagan next to the Arizona Memorial really puts its size into perspective  - ENORMOUS

Towers 20 stories above the waterline
1092 feet long; nearly as long as the Empire State Building is tall
Flight deck covers 4.5 acres
4 bronze propellers, each 21 feet across, weighing 66,200 pounds
2 rudders, each 29 by 22 feet and weighing 50 tons
4 high speed aircraft elevators, each over 4,000 square feet

Costs the Navy approximately $250,000 per day for pier side operation
Costs the Navy approximately $2.5 million per day for underway operations (Sailor's salaries included).

The best part though, is the Reagan is to Liberals as a penis is to man-hating members of N.O.W.  (or a denizen of Olympia, WA) -  a hated symbol of evil & oppression.  Hooo-ahhhhhh.

Oh yeah. Oh HELL yeah.
2.5 million a day is money well spent; the price of freedom is an investment and it isn't cheap. Ever.

I had the privilege of assisting in the Ronald Reagan's pre-commisioning. A beautiful ship.
BTW: the majority of that $2.5M is spent on aviation fuel (JP) and aircraft maintainence, not salaries.

It's a Navy tradition to "man the rails" whenever a ship first enters Pearl Harbor and passes by the Arizona.

When you do it, it really gives a sense of history, perspective and respect. One of the highlights of my time in the Navy.
