STG....the older rest stops in Germany were just parking spots next to the woods with little trails leading in.
There are still a few there. I saw them myself just a month ago.
But in their defense they have some of the most incredible rest stops I have ever seen some with near 4 star cafes.
(wine and beer served, too!) You have to pay 50 Euro to use the toilets but some give you a credit back toward a purchase.
There's either an attendeant that cleans the stalls after each and every person uses it ( he/she sits in the restrooms all shift collecting your coins....what a shitty job THAT is) OR...in a couple cases...a button that starts a sanitizing machine for the seat.
