Private Doubleday

Private Doubleday
A good 10 years ago I began an Internet search for a series of films near and dear to my childhood heart.  I only remembered the hero's name - Pvt. Doubleday.  The gimmick:  Doubleday was the Gomer Pyle of  WWII, but had a photographic memory.  He used it to confound his Sgt., played by some guy I could see in my head, but not pin down.  The movies,  there were just 2, or 3,  would rotate with one playing every Sunday afternoon on Chicago television.  Week, after week, after week.   My sister and I loved them.  Just now I thought I'd try again, and voila ... an obscure New York Times piece had details (IMDB still doesn't know about them).

Given Hollywood's penchant for stealing ideas from itself, I'm surprised they haven't updated it.  Just as well they haven't.  A new version would star Ben Affleck, using his powers to memorize documents that would cause the evil Republican President to be impeached.

Next Week, Ma & Pa Kettle get Naked.

If you want that premise, all you have to do is tune over to USANetwork on Friday nights and watch "Psych"!! Guy is scamming the police (his father is a retired cop) and uses his photographic memory to solve the crimes.

Very funny show.
