Michael J Fox campaign ad

A look at embryonic stems
Ann Coulter's ''Godless''

Ann Coulter, "Godless," page 193 -  Click for a 2 page repro

I won't get into a whole rant on stem cells in this space, but it's hard to avoid altogether.  In her book "Godless," Ann Coulter suggests that ''Liberals lie about the science on stem-cell research because they warm to the idea of destroying human embryos.''  I don't share Coulter's opinion in this instance, believing instead that they don't mind destroying human embryos if it can be used as a political wedge issue.  With the tide of opinion on abortion swung way against them, democrats need an issue to replace their biggest money maker.

Here's a current, and despicable example,  in my opinion.  What I found of more interest were some of the comments (and I have an alert from SondraK for this).

Why doesn't Michael J. Fox ask the Canadian government to fund stem cell research. Oh yeah, the Canadian government regulates the price of drugs so that drug companies only do research in the US. Go back to Canada Mike and complain to your member of parliament!

If I ran a contest asking for the most succinct argument against the Liberal love affair with
''cheap Canadian drugs,''  that's the winner. Some others I liked, just because ...

Typical liberal BULLSHIT!! Why don't you have Soros fund stem cell research. Oh i forgot he's to busy funding Left Wing groups!!

You know..it's funny how liberals can have faith in things have NEVER been proven to work. Adult stem cell research has produced REAL results...just look it up. Embryo stem cell research has produced ZIP ZERO NADA. Yet libs want to fund this horrific practice in hopes it will yield a miracle cure. I don't fault MJF for hoping...he has a close personal stock in this. But for the rest of us unbias folks, we need to stick to the facts.

Why does it have to be government funded? Let the free market decide. (It has in the case of adult stems, because they show results) If the prognosis is so great for solutions with stem cells, why aren't billionaires, putting their money where their mouthes are? You lefties want the gov't to solve all problems. That's not how it works dipshit. Bush, Bush, Bush. Can you believe BUSH let the yankees lose in the playoffs? Can you believe Bush made it a hot summer? I hope Bush doesn't make it snow too much this winter.... You whackos are ridiculous.

And finally, this from the aptly named ..

That brought tears to my eyes. Sacrifice the many for the few. That is the Republican way: from the soldiers dying in Iraq to Michael J.

UPDATE:- Read Myron's comment that scores the manipulation this issue is subjected to.

Before I comment let me say my wife was diagnosed with Parkinson's last April so some of what I say is based on my own research and comments from her neurologist.

Did you notice how Fox was bouncing around in this video? Did you see him on Boston Legal recently? Quite a difference. He was extremely calm. I wonder why the difference? Oh, yeah. A calm demeanor in a Parkinson's patient begging for stem cell research probably doesn't get the desired reaction like a Parkinson's patient bobbing, weaving and jerking might. According to my wife's neuro, if you overdose a Parkinson's patient, it will usually exacerbate the tremors, etc. So, for normal activities like acting on Boston Legal, Fox takes the proper meds. For his appearances before Congress, making this little video, etc he overdoses. Or maybe underdoses. Whatever it takes to get the desired image out there.

I am sorry to hear about your wife's travail, but am happy that so many advances have been made re Parkinson's since an erstwhile boss of mine was totally incapacitated by it within three years of diagnosis. Your observations about Fox's manipulation are priceless.

Having worked in nursing homes for several years, I've never seen a Parkinson's patient moving like that. Tremors, yes; bobbing and weaving, no. He looks like someone with the *far* worse genetic disease Huntington's chorea.

I believe Dr. Myron identified that worse condition: over acting.
