non-consecutive terms

''... working at the intersection of business and government.''
If you're looking for an American politician to admire, you could do worse than John H. Ketcham.  His achievment? He served 17 non-consecutive terms in Congress (according to this account).

I have no idea why, but this gossipy piece ["Tom Strickland's revenge"], about the coming race to fill Wayne Allard's (R CO) U.S. Senate seat triggered that thought. Maybe because Allard succeeded Hank Brown, whom I also admired for similar reasons.  Brown spent a few term in the Colorado Senate, a few more in the U.S. House, and two terms in the U.S. Senate.  Then he got out to take care of bidness (which means, of course, he had a business outside of politics).  Allard himself is leaving after two terms.

Henry Clay was elected to the House in non-consecutive elections four times.  What I admire about all of them is they saw public service as something of an imposition. It's no coincidence that none were democrats (Clay was a Whig).   They had real jobs that needed taking care of, and serving in congress was considered a duty, not a well paying sinecure with perks galore..   That's the way it should be.

If you don't read the ''Tom Strickland" article, here's the most delicious part.

Since leaving Congress two years ago, McInnis has been employed in the Denver office of Hogan & Hartson. It's a humongous international law firm (1,000-plus attorneys, 22 offices worldwide) that describes its mission delicately as "working at the intersection of business and government."

That's a fun phrase. In plain English, it means lobbying for dollars.

McInnis is the Republican thought most likely to run for Allard's seat.

Ketcham was elected as a Republican to the 39th, 40, 41, 42nd Congresses (March 4, 1865-March 3, 1873); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1872 to the Forty-third Congress; elected as a Republican to the 45th, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52nd Congresses (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1893); elected as a Republican to the 55th, 56, 57, 58, 59th Congresses and served from March 4, 1897, until his death in New York City November 4, 1906;

Actually pretty near a lifer.

Unfortunately, until we have term limits, the spirit of Cinncinnatus is dead for the most part. Even term limits have a down side: can a bunch of non-professional Congressmen, relative amateurs in the DC circus, handle the enormous rule-making bureaucracies and their lobbyists who will remain permanent party in DC?

Barf is right. I can not believe how fast Colorado went from a red to a blue state. If the republicans lose this seat and that is a very real possibility, 2 GD democart senators along with a democrat state house and a democrat governor is going to push me over the edge.

Our democrat state reps have already prepared the union payback bill which will allow unions to take dues from non union memebers to use anyway they want and another bill that will kill the fledgling charter schools. Plus the new gov is hell bent to install a MA like health care system, along with more taxes on private doctors and hospitals.

And he's making noises about some new taxes. 1 WEEK, I GD *UCKING WEEK, these bastards have been here. The last session, republican gov Owens vetoed 90+ bills, now the GD floodgates are open with a democrat gov. Makes me sick and naturally the papers here are bent over for this.

Plus, just to twist the knife, the MoFos are having their convention in Denver this summer. North Carolina here I come.
