I grew up in a town that was in the middle of the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana. I remember when the Federal law was changed allowing Indians to drink. The town jail was usually pretty empty. Two weeks after the law changed, the jail was crammed with Indians in trouble because of alcohol.
50 Years of later, the main cause of death of male Indians under 35 is crashes because of DWI. The second leading cause of death is drunken bar fights. The alcoholism rate on the reservation is 85%. We gave the Indians casinos out of guilt, we would have served them much better by retaining the law forbidding them alcohol.
It is an American tragedy for which there is no solution. -

I mad a journey to the Rose Bud Reservation to arrest the ex wife of Russel Means, I was treated very well but advised not to be on the reservation after sundown because they could not assure my safty and they were serious. I called out for reenforcements the next day and told them I would provide my for my own safty. I also talked at lenghth to some of the maintenance people that kept the place running I could tell you horror stories about what was the main reason for plumbing blockages. It is truely a nightmare world.
