Juice's Birds

Mocking Bird Hill

Juice has a great recipe for Mock Mocking Bird

Rodger,

A Little Bird Story:

Last year in our Fat Albert Spruce tree a family of House Finch made their family nest. Each day we sat by the pool we would watch them fly in and out of their nest by way of covert actions to be sure nothing followed.  The male stood watch duty on the neighbor's chimney or atop the spruce. We could hear the babies cheeping away, and we marveled at how smart a choice it was to have selected a home too sharp and uncomfortable for our cats to reach.

And then, the temperatures hit 104-107F day after day. So hot I didn't even want to go out to the pool.  When temps dropped and I returned to pool side, I noticed the lack of cheeping birds and thought they must've grown and flown away, so I went to the tree.  There were all the babies dehydrated to death. Of course I teared for their loss.

This year a family of N. American Mocking birds have built a nest in our iron arbor with combo climbing rose and Chilean jasmine traveling its height. It sits about three feet outside a living room window and we've again considered how smart they are to build in a prickly rose bush to be safe from our cats.  The wind is blowing about 30mph today and the little nest is rocking but still seems secure.  My eye is on it this time if I'm allowed to assist, I will.  Thought you might like the photos, even though they're not the top quality of stuff you find for your blog. Anywho, you and the MoSup might like to see them.

Hope you get these okay! :)

Juice, don't morn the House Finch's. They were introduced in Brooklyn in the mid 1800's for insect control, which the don't do very well. They will also steal a Bluebird nest and kill their peeps. Blubirds do a far better job of insect control and have almost disappeared in some areas due to the House Finch. Love your photos!

Yuppers, cool pics Juice. I like birds...cats and rodents, not so much.

I guess one reason the birdie's lives get to me so much, is how inspiring it is to watch them prepare for new life. So careful in the selection, execution, and protection of the family the're building. And just when they've done everything right...

BAM!

Some damn liberals strike down their happy lives with some new shit, catastrophic legislaton to undermine their security.

That's how I see it, anyways.

We had hummingbird nests in my Japanese Maple trees last year. Little twerps sure are cute when they hatch. Not as big as a dime.
