But shouldn't we be asking the most important question: How will this affect undocumented workers?
The main problem with these fee increases, IMO, is the same as here in CA: only those who show they can cough up the fines will be liable. For instance, illegals caught, NOT!
My oldest brother had a traffic accident with an "Hispanic type" at fault, driving w/o insurance. It is CA state law to have insurance, but we pay additional coverage fees for *uninsured drivers*. The judge, in court, told my brother that he could better afford the damages than the guilty party. So pay up. (No fking lie.)
My new favorite line for understanding anything the Left in this county does came from Rush yesterday as I laughed out loud:
"You know what the Democrat slogan ought to be? 'We've got what it takes to take what you've got.'"
As a libertarian I say individual rights, individual responsibility.
Driving in California is absolutly dangerous to your health. Three years ago I was broadsided from the driver's side by a Hispanic female who ran a red light. The car was totalled and I spend 8 hours in the emergency room. Since I was working at the time and was not allowed to use my own medical insurancew, I had to face the new improved workman's comp system; those bastards should be shot.
Except for the numbness in the toes of my leg leg and the fact that I can't walk for about a half a block without pain, I'm OK. I wasn't unable to recover anything because she had no money and workman's comp took everything to else from her insurance to cover their costs. Those who drive without a license should be executed. Run a red light, you should have your automobile confiscated and you should go to jail. It should be as difficult to get a driver's license as it is to get a pilot's license. If you can't pass the test, ride a bike and solve another one of America's problem, drop some weight off your fat ass.
Except for the fact that Virginia will piss away the extra revenue you've missed the mark on this one Rodger. I'll reserve MY rat bastard designation for drivers who break the law.
They're gonna love the insurance premiums that will follow the fine increase. Va. is for lovers. The gift that keeps on taking.
What was I thinking FredW? For a moment there I thought outrageously excessive fines and intrusive camera traps were hidden taxes imposed ny increasingly out-of-control gummint, when all along the state is just being altruistic. *slaps head*
No biggie Rodger, just proves that unlike the left, we are only human.
Keep up the good work!
One fact that hasn't been mentioned enough is that the "civil fees" will be assessed only against Virginia residents. Out of staters will pay only the traffic fines and additional court costs if they choose to appear.
A local lawyer has already announced he's going to court to overturn the new law because they will not be applied uniformly to every offender and are therefore unconstitutional.
Our slimey Governor Kaine strikes again. I'm really beginning to dislike that Liberal weasel.
And I agree with FredW about raising standards for obtaining a driver's license. Too many people on the road more or less aiming a 4000 lb missile, coasting or zooming in a stupor and incapable of controlling it if something goes the least bit awry.

I've been pondering traffic cameras lately, specifically, how do they continue to exist?
What boisterous teen doesn't want to take out a traffic camera, either with a paintgun or other? I'm no longer a teen, but put a traffic camera in my neighborhood, and it'll last not long.
TG Dick...
Where do I get my 4000 lb missile? Rodger's got the B-52. I want mine.
And I'm more than willing to remain in a stupor. Or incapable of controlling it.
Michigan started this back in 2005 when "The Jennifer" decided it was better to raise taxes on the backs of the poor. Now we have things like this.
Alear, not that I would ever condone such a thing, but among the scholars at my website, the general consensus is that close range camera assassination would best be done with either a .45-70 Govt bullet or 12ga shotgun slug, and longer ranges would require at minimum a .308 Win or .30-06 bullet.

In the UK, the traditional method involves an old tire and some petrol.

A bullet is cheaper than a gallon of gasoline. Though a flaming tire on a camera does have a certain flair...
Oregon Guy - Check out any 20-something airhead chick driving a Ford Expedition on I-95 changing lanes like a pinball while talking on a cell phone and looking over her shoulder yelling at the kid in the baby seat in back, or the 60-something with tunnel vision driving the 75 Caprice with a sagging spring and maladjusted mirrors and a dog between him and the steering wheel, etc...
I enjoy a good uncontrolled stupor now and then too, just not at 75 mph. ;>)

Three words:
Milwaukee Tools Sawsall
A Sawsall is the right tool for any job. And now they make cordless versions for times when the came... uh, I mean "job site", is without an electrical outlet.
Now, what to do about the video cameras appearing at every intersection???
