Bird lore

Hawk and Heron

I only mention this because I'd never seen it before.  I walked Reagan the Wonder Dog along the beach.  This is where she always goes swimming.  While she's splashing about I noticed the Heron standing dead still in the water.  Bunch of ducks and their ducklings scattered for Reagan, but not this guy.  Strange,  On the way back I kept looking back, and the bird was still there.  When I got home I called for Mother Superior to "follow me, and grab the camera."

I was telling her about what I'd seen and she related she'd just been down to the pool, about 200 yards down the shoreline, and they had witnessed a hawk dive bombing, and otherwise harassing a heron. She (MoSup) looked around and immediately spotted the hawk (I'm sure it was an osprey) perched high in a tree. She has 20-1 (as in one)vision I think, because it took me forever to find it.  When I finally located it and began snapping pictures, it flew off.  As soon as the osprey left, the heron hightailed it out of there, obviously relieved.

I need abetter camera.

When I lived in St. Pete I saw something similar. Heron standing frozen at the edge of a pond, I watched him for a while because it was odd. Ducks swimming around (those ugly Muscovey ducks as I recall). Didn't see the gator until one of the ducks suddenly and violently became it's dinner. When the gator was busy with the duck the heron got busy getting out of the water.

Once had a business deal with a fancy zen/yuppy type rest spa near Tucson.
They had this closed loop stream & pond system filled with fancy foot long Koi fish. Imagine their new aged angst when the Blue Herons came through:-) The grounds keeper and I got a chuckle as this pair of birds feasted on the desert oasis 30.00 per fish.
