Rejoice

Jumping The Fence

Mark Steyn

On the eve of Independence Day, the people of this great republic declared their independence from the United States Senate under the stirring battle-cry, "No legislation without explanation!" The geniuses who'd cooked up the "comprehensive" immigration bill's "grand bargain" behind the scenes in the pork-filled rooms had originally planned to ram it through in 48 hours before Memorial Day. And, right to the end, the bipartisan Emirs-for-life of Incumbistan gave the strong impression they regarded it as an affront to be required by the impertinent whippersnappers of the citizenry to address the actual content of the legislation.

  • Senator Trenthorn Lotthorn (R, Lottissippi) said: who cares if they call? They could call 1-800-BLOWHARD (and leave off the "D" for "Deal's already done") 24 hours a day and he still wasn't going to listen to them. "To think that you're going to intimidate a senator," he scoffed, "into voting one way or the other by gorging your phones with phone calls — most of whom don't even know where Gulfport is." ( Gulfport is a port in the Gulf emirate whose grateful people Sultan Trent has ruled o'er lo these many years.)

I like the villagers with pitchforks and torches imagery.

The peasants are revolting!

I'm sure most of them know where their voting place is, and he better feel intimidated...

I didn't think they called it intimidating, I thought it was Listening to the will of the people. You know, the ones you represnet. Us. We the People. I think this was a magnificent reminder to all those Public Servants that We are the Public, and they are Servants. Let'em blow if it makes'em feel better.

Well, Sen. Lotthorn does have a point, unintentional as it may be. "There ain't no fence big enough, high enough, strong enough" to keep out a mass of humanity determined to swim around it, dig under it, or cut their way through it. That's why the fence is a complete waste of time as far as latino migrations are concerned. If the Senate were serious about deterring illegal immigration, I have a very simple formula:

1. Minimum $5,000 fine and 2 days in jail for anyone who employs an illegal alien, PER EMPLOYEE, PER DAY. Citizens, corporations, and Mitt Romney included.

2. Quadrupul legal immigration quotas for certain countries, only for those applying in person in their country of origin. Applicants found to be in the US illegally during the application period are banned from entry for life.

With that in place, a fence would become counter-productive, as it would only slow down the massive wave of humanity trying to go south. You wouldn't even have to enforce it very hard, too many people would be deathly afraid of the potential penalty to risk hiring. Then it becomes simple supply and demand, no jobs, no illegals.
