Smoke Nazis Cause Profits to Plunge

What Gummit Does

Casino earnings plummeted in the second quarter, further proof that Atlantic City's partial smoking ban and extra competition from slot parlors in neighboring states continue to hurt the bottom line for the gaming industry.

Gross operating profits for the 11 casinos totaled $291.3 million for the quarter, down 19 percent compared to $359.4 million in the same period last year, according to figures released Friday by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission.

Donald Trump cited the city's partial smoking ban as the "significant cause" of the downturn. He sent a letter this week to the mayor and City Council president asking them to repeal the tobacco restrictions, which limit smoking to no more than 25 percent of the casino floor.

Reminds me of an old joke.

Do you smoke after sex?
No, I use a lubricant.

I run a privately owned "mini-casino" (15 tables, no slots allowed) just south of Seattle. When the Washington State ban on smoking in public places went into effect in late '05 our revenue dropped 17% in the first year. Of course the nearby Indian casinos don't have to follow the ban since they aren't state controlled. They don't have to follow state laws on wages and hours of operation either. Oh yeah, they do well over $1 billion per year in business and pay ZERO taxes.

Our Indian policy was flawed from the beginning; still is.

'Indian Policy' is, and always has been bullshit...If that's the way it has to be then I say "No traffic in, and NO traffic out."
