earnings plummeted in the second quarter, further proof that Atlantic
City's partial smoking ban and extra competition from slot parlors in
neighboring states continue to hurt the bottom line for the gaming
industry.
Gross operating profits for the 11 casinos totaled $291.3 million for
the quarter, down 19 percent compared to $359.4 million in the same
period last year, according to figures released Friday by the New
Jersey Casino Control Commission.
Donald Trump cited the city's partial smoking ban as the "significant
cause" of the downturn. He sent a letter this week to the mayor and
City Council president asking them to repeal the tobacco restrictions,
which limit smoking to no more than 25 percent of the casino floor.
