Vaccinate Kids or Go to Jail

SHOTS
My first reaction to this story was Grrrr.  Then I remembered that me and MoSup had recently discussed this topic, in the context of the recent "plague" of autism. Since she is the winner of the Nobel Prize for knowing medical stuff, I just got a refresher.

She stated that she would be very hesitant to have our kids vaccinated today. Why?  Combi-vacs (Combined vaccine).  Whereas our kids were vaccinated individually for MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) and Chicken Pox, for example, today's vaccination might combine as many as three or four vaccines in one dose.  There is some concern that something, possibly the diluent (solution they are combined with), is causing unforeseen reaction.  One thing is for certain:  autism has exploded since these Combi-vacs were introduced.  Is there a link?  It's sure being looked into.

I'm guessing that a lot of these parents have little or no idea about why they're against letting their chilluns get the shots, but are reacting to urbanrumors.  For now, a solution for these families might be for officials to acknowledge that their misgivings may have foundation, and suggesting vaccination be given ala-carte, like before, when there were few fewer problems.  Of course, now that I have published this Schlong Medical Alert, ratbastard tort lawyers will be using it as basis to sue the hell out of PG County if they don't allow parents this option, and kids start coming down with stuff.  That would be a shame too, since the goal is to starve these legal parasites out of existence.

Disclaimer:  I'm not a doctor, but I did eat prime rib last night.

The vaccine-autism linkage has already been investigated, and according to reports shows no linkage.

The vast upswing in autism is not that there is more autism, but that autism (and autism related disorders) has been redefined to become more inclusive (thus increasing the numbers), and, more doctors and parents are willing (and sometimes more than willing) to have a child labeled autistic in order to reap the benefits of the medical and social systems, thus increasing the numbers in another way.

I concur. Autism is MUCH more understood now than even 10 years ago. It isn't that there is more autism, but rather that we are more able to diagonse it properly. In many ways, it is similar to the learning disability stuff: In the "old days" a kid who could not read well was "slow." Now we understand that SOME kids are wired different, and we know how to teach to them.

And as for the "combi-vacs" what do you think MMR is? Measles, mumps and rubela are all different bugs. Roger, O My King, Do NOT let this myth (Thymerisol based or otherwise) blind you to the truth.. MORE KIDS LIVE TODAY because of vacination. Think..When was the last time you saw a child who was crippled by polio? Or heard of a kid who died of whooping cough? Or the once dreaded scarlet fever?? Is any human science perfect? Of course not. But these Docs have kids too.. And they want rheir kids to live as well.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I work in the medical research arena. And what I learned from Roger's web site helped me lower my blood sugar. Cinnimon WORKS. And now my Doc, who was initially skeptical, is working on a full research study on cinnimon and other botanicals on human blood serum levels.

Part of the Autism upswing is due to it simply being recognized and diagnosed more. Autism wasn't much known (at least by the public).

All commenters above have apparently had their approved dose of AMA pablum.

Dammit people, think for yourselves! Geez

Autism, SIDS, etc, etc. Connect the dots people. None of my kids (now 15-23 yrs old) ever had any vaccines from those medieval hacks.

So.. Anyone who disagrees with you isn't thinking for themselves, huh? How very Democratic of you.

WTF? Why would I want to be "Democratic"? We live in a Republic... er, it's supposed to be anyway.

Learn to disagree and dicuss rationally, name calling is so intelligent. MFCSLBCMF... lol

Oh, high and mighty anonymous of 11:55 PM EST...

Of couse, I should listen to you and discard any silly notions I have of following the statistical studies of medical science. After all I haven't been fitted for my tinfoil hat either. And Dennis Kookcinich is going to hold a seat for me on the mother ship.

The increase due to reclassification is a common, but publicly misunderstood, effect. The classic example is in the 70's when the World Health Organization (WHO) saw an upswing in deaths due to pneumonia and influenza in Africa. My father was the Chief of Biometrics at the National Institutes of Health at the time, and determined that the "increase" was offset by a "decrease" in deaths due to old age, "colds," and especially "undetermined fevers."

As to direct bad effects, it certainly is possible that specific formulations could have unknown side effects in portions of the population. But, massive and thorough statistics are kept. Studies are done. Metastudies are published. There is no link between vacinations and autism

That genetics are the chief cause of autism has been known for three decades. It was in 1977 that Professor Michael Rutter, of the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, published a twin study that transformed the understanding of its origins. Twin studies are one of the mainstays of genetics. Because identical twins share all of their genes while fraternal twins share only half, and both share broadly similar environments, comparisons can tease out the relative contributions of nature and nurture. Professor Rutter found that if an identical twin was autistic, it was highly likely that the other twin was autistic too. Fraternal twins, however, were no more likely to share the diagnosis than ordinary siblings. This made it certain that genes played a large role and it is now thought that autism is among the most heritable of all psychiatric disorders. Genetics account for most of the variance and, although environmental factors matter too, they are less important.
