KFC - Second Look

Time to Buy YUM?

A few years ago I gave KFC the dreaded "Unfit for human consumption" review.  It had become so bad that we tried Popeye's, which I liked but MoSup can't abide because of all the MSG.  Finally, I was reduced to going to the Schlong Kitchen Lab, which produced good results, but at the price of wasting my valuable time. But wait!

Monday we bought some KFC because Ro associates it with Christmas, and expects it at the family Christmas Eve spread.  Horry Clap!  It was way, way crispy, just as I remembered the Colonel's original chicken, lo those many years ago, which disappeared after he sold out to Heublein in 1971. I know, the pic above is the "crispy" chicken, and the soggy crap to the left is "regular," but the point is, it didn't much matter which you bought.  Both were all grease and no crunch.

Another noticeable change, to its detriment if you ask me, is that along with rediscovered "crispy,"  they seem to have stripped pepper from the secret herbs and spices.  But, this stuff is so good that I have a taste for some right now.  I'm going to predict increased sales over the next year, and watch parent company YUM's stock ($38.66).

I loved KFC when I was a kid in Oz. I haven't had it for years because the last time I had it was literally dripping oil. If I get brave I'll give it another try.

I think you'll like it, unless of course our local KFC outlet is run by a rogue franchisee who revolted, and we're the only people who get the good stuff.

After Heublein purchased KFC, they kept Col. Sanders on as spokesman. He would randomly visit KFC sites and raise holy hell over sloppy attention to detail, which included horrid mashed potatoes and gravy, as well as inferior chicken. Corporate was, I imagine, grateful for his death.

Well I have a KFC less than 1/2 a mile away. If its not good I'll blame you ;-)

Finger lickin' greasy. Not that it's necessarily a bad!
Also, the green bean side dish is one of the best sides going. But groin-grabbingly expensive.

The local Hardees was better at chicken for years, then they quit making it. Plus, they took the francise away from the KFC in town and now it is a fast food egg roll place. I guess there are always mcnuggets.

Not too important, but KFC has thee worst cole slaw of any FF place. Tiny little peices of mush.

To each his own; KFC cole slaw is our favoritest after Annapolis Seafood's.

I too used to LOVE KFC - now, not so much. Especially since their cole slaw quality has bottomed out. I do, however, recommend BOJANGLES if you've got one in your area!

Just don't go into the one in Oxon Hill, Maryland in a group comprised of one crazy Jamaican lady and 2 even crazier white women "of a certain age" and proceed to order:

Jamaican: 2 - 28 pc. all white meat buckets, plus 1 - 8 pc. and 1 - 3 pc. (again all white meat), plus biscuits.

White woman #1 - 2 - 28 pc. all white meat buckets, plus 1 - 8 pc. and 1 - 3 pc. (again all white meat), plus biscuits.

White woman #2 - 1 - 28 pc. all white meat bucket, one 3-pc. all white meat and biscuits.

The manager damned near had a nervous breakdown. We were almost helpless with raucous laughter. That's a lot of all white meat chicken to pack up and I haven't even MENTIONED THE SIDES.

And we drove from Fredericksburg, Virginia to get it!

When you want chicken, you WANT it.

Just my 2Cents: IF you get a KFC kitchen run by kids who don't follow instructions, you'll get crap.

IF you go to a KFC where there are little old ladies (like the one I used to live near in Ft.Lauderdale) who actually FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS and actually KNOW how to cook chicken, you'll get what the Colonel actually intended.

(I try to avoid fast-food joints with teens cooking and have a LOT less stomach problems and unsatisfying meals....)

Having lucked into a roadside fried chicken shack when I was vacationing in Fairhope, Alabama, and gone to heaven, there's no going back to KFC for me.

Fried chicken has more variance than any other fast food. I worked as a cook during high school, and the above poster has it almost correct:
Follow the instructions, and you can have some very quality food. Dick around, and you're gonna have junk.
Our restaurant was all high school age cooks. Five of eight of us appeared on the local Academic Challenge quiz show. But even the stoners (and there was a crossover) could cook tasty chicken.
As for MSG, too bad for MS, because I love that stuff. I'd sprinkle it on my Cheerios if I still ate Cheerios.

One other thought: If you want KFC, go when it's busy. You don't want chicken that's been sitting in a warmer for an hour. You really don't.
Also, don't go to the drive through. Go inside, and you can see the chicken on the trays. Instantly know if it's gonna be teh suck, and then walk out.

How interesting that you got Colonel over Christmas. Just this past Sunday, Mamma and I were doing last minute shopping and decided to pick up a bucket of extra crispy because it was getting too late go home and cook. Rodger, in all my years of eating that chicken, I have never had a bad bucket until now. That shit was soggier than a wet diaper left on the baby for 2 days straight! WTF?!?! The only thing I can figure is that some idiot cooked it wrong or didn't bother draining the pieces before putting them in the bucket.

Anyway, did you get the chance to try that recipe I sent you? Mamma didn't get me the pressure cooker I wanted for Christmas so now I've gotta go out and get the damned thing myself. I'm dying to see how it comes out when it's cooked that way.
