Over the Rainbow

The Rainbow Coalition Evaporates
Black anger grows as illegal immigrants transform urban neighborhoods.

“I have gone on the streets and talked to people at random here in the black community, and they all ask me the same question: ‘Why are our politicians and leaders letting this happen?’ ” What’s got Anderson—motto: “If You Ain’t Mad, You Ain’t Payin’ Attention”—so worked up isn’t the Jena Six or nooses on Columbia University doorknobs; it’s the illegal immigrants who allegedly murdered three Newark college students last August. And when he excoriates politicians for “letting this happen,” he’s directing his fire at Congressional Black Caucus members who support open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens. “Massive illegal immigration has been devastating to my community,” Anderson, a former auto mechanic and longtime South Central Los Angeles resident, tells listeners. “Black Americans are hit the hardest.”

Though blacks have long worried that the country’s growing foreign-born population, especially its swelling rolls of illegal immigrants, harmed their economic prospects, they have also followed their political leadership in backing liberal immigration policies. Now, however, as new waves of immigration inundate historically African-American neighborhoods, black opinion is hardening against the influx. “We will not lay down and take this any longer,” says Anderson. If he’s right, it could upend the political calculus on immigration.

" ... isn't the  Jena Six or nooses on Columbia University doorknobs  ... ." Why would either of these contrivances make blacks mad?  That aside, there may be racism in the country, but dammit we have done more to address it than any civilization in history.  From my vantage point, near 100% of today's racial incitements come via blacks themselves, guilt ridden or Machiavellian liberals, and Hispanic comedians.  In fact, if a virus killed every white liberal tonight, the healing would begin in the morning.

It's 99% of the liberals that give the rest a bad name.

Believe me, there is no doubt of the absolute hatred blacks feel towards latinos, especially Mexicans. And now with hispanics becoming the second largest minority and feeling their oats, that dislike and distrust is being returned in spades(no pun intended-really)

Maybe things are different in more middle middle class areas, but I still have friends in both gentrified neighborhoods and areas that have been inundated with illegals and there's a whole lotta animosity floating around. And the funniest part is that both groups are bitching because they think their rice bowl is getting looted. Love watching it. Another funny thing is how you never see Asians bitching. In Denver, the Asians live in mostly latino areas, and they just put their nose to the grindstone, get their kids into college and run their various business.

For all the talk of a dream ticket, I find it hard to believe it could happen.

MM -- depending on whose statistics you believe, and how the terms are defined, the Hispanic/Latino segment of the US population is already the largest minority with about 13.4% of the total. African-Americans make up around 12.7% (again depending on whether the Latino who is all or mostly African by descent is in this group or the Latino group).

The best number I find consistently for the number of part black or all-black Latinos is under one million, something like 660,000 or so.

Asians account for about 4% of the total population, and all others (including native Americans) are under 1%. Some figures include Arabs as Caucasians and some don't.

The bottom line is that the country is approximately 70% white European, 25% either black or Latino/Hispanic, and 5% Asian and all "others."

Projections tend to agree that by 2070 at the very latest, if current trends continue, the white segment of the US population will be under 50%. Some estimate that the balance will tip nearer to 2050.

Pretty easy to Google, but just as easy to get confused. Wikipedia is pretty hozed up on the issue, taking what I'd call some large liberties with estimates, numbers rounding, and category overlaps. US Census Bureau probably has the best figures, but their report takes forever to read and digest.

I saw a few neat pies along the way, but none that work for this discussion. My children list themselves as "other" when asked. They're part American Caucasian and part Polynesian/Asian. But since they all owe me money and never remember to repay it, I call them "Amnesians."

Funny how your mind works et. When I said the second largest minority, I was thinking after whites. Which of course aren't a minority

I mention it only 'cause it usedta be one of my pet peeves. I'd ask my classes to tell me the percentage of blacks in America and find the answers mind boggling. Some were convinced that African-Americans were around 50% of the total population. Drove me bats.

In my view of things, everybody's a minority. I'm not "white", I'm a Danish/Scottish American. Which is to say, a minority.

In fact, at some level, we are all minorities. The only demographic group which is NOT a minority is women. The rest is just demographic gamesmanship, lumping together disparate groups to create a "white" majority.

It peeves me that certain people get special treatment (such as Affirmative Action) by claiming that they are "minorities" and somehow I'm not.
