Paint Net

Paint.Net

Paint.net is quite a good freebie if you're looking to get into picture manipulation.  It compares very favorably to Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, and even integrates with PS plug-ins, I understand.  It's so close to PSP, which I use, that I used it intuitively without reading a thing.  There are video tutors, etc, and  Paint Net  has a distinct advantage over Photoshop (PSP sold out to Corel, and now sucks) - it's FREE.

OK, I've used CorelDraw and PhotoPaint for over 13 years now and I've used Adobe Illustrater and PhotoShop and aside from a few things having different names for tools they do the same stuff. I find Corel easier to use and find the stuff I need but that is probably because I use it more often. Also, I am not some part time dabbler, I use CorelDraw and PhotoPaint about 7 out of every 8 hours I work, so 35 hours a week. In my opinion, use whichever you feel most comfortable with. For the serious stuff I recommend Corel or Adobe. I use Corel mostly because in my industry most of the machinery is designed to use it. Laser engravers (120W)and big fancy sublimation printers and stuff.

Thanks Mitch, I will yield to the professional. PSP 1.0 was my introduction into the art some 15 years, or so, ago. I bought a used Corel suite about 8 years ago, and it was so vastly different from PSP, and not requiring all that much by way of implements, I stuck with PSP. Been using ver. 9 now for several years. I looked at Corel version 10, and it seemed counter intuitive. Nine of ten people, I think, will never need anything more than a good paint program anyway. I use P-Shopped pics on my blog more or less as editorial cartoons, and don't worry all that much about details. If I have to, though, I can muster an occasional "B" on sites like Worth.

My son, who is a professional illustrator also uses Adobe, so he gets the best of everything free (including a monster MAC).

Totally lacking in artistic talent as I am, I find Paint.NET to be overkill. For simple cropping, resizing, and adding texts, I use PhotoFiltre, which is also free, and simpler.

It's French, though.

Rodger,
Don't yield to me, you've got more years than me at this. I started with CorelDraw6 I think. Maybe 5. It's hard to remember that far back. 10 sucked. X3 is pretty good. Once you learn one all the others seem counter-intuitive. The only reason I bother stumbling through Adobe is that I do have to work with a lot of people in the printing industry and sometimes Corel and Adobe have some conflicts and things won't transfer from one to the other correctly.(Understatement). Like your son I get my Corel stuff free and the boss gave me a decent computer for home. I should spend my home time working with Adobe. If I was as good with it as I am at Corel I'd be making good moneyin the printing industry. Unfortunately graphic arts in the awards industry pays much less. But I like my job and my boss, so I stay.
