Well, f*ck me entirely too much. Live long enuf and you finally figure out some tricky stuff.
All my life I've pondered and fretted over the way women react to babies. I mean, they completely discombobulate. And take away the word *cute* from the discussion, and there'd be no discussion at all.
"Isn't he cute." "Oh, my God, what a cute baby!" JHC! I've never seen a cute infant in my entire life . . . fat, wrinkled, puffy-eyed, noisy, snotty, pukey little shits. I never could figure out why any woman, after having ONE kid, with all the morning sickness, the sleepless nights, the sore nipples, the varicose veins, the hard-to-lose weight gain, the smelly diapers, the terrible twos, the mysterious fevers . . . WHY would any woman having gone through all that once ever want to endure it again??!!
It's like I could intellectually understand the instincts -- survival of the race and all that -- but emotionally, viscerally, I couldn't get a handle on it any more than I could explain to a woman precisely what it feels like to ride a bike over a curb, slide off the seat, and hit those aggies on the crossbar.
Now I know. I look at puppies and the same gooeyness comes over me that comes over women when they see babies. Finally! I get it. My apologies to all those ladies I've ridiculed, condescended to, and criticized all these years. And I had to get the lesson from another curmudgeon. C'est la vie. -
