Couple Sues Google Over "Street View"

APRIL 4--A Pittsburgh couple is suing Google for invasion of privacy, claiming that the web giant's popular "Street View" mapping feature has made a photo of their home available to online searchers. Aaron and Christine Boring accuse Google of an "intentional and/or grossly reckless invasion" of their seclusion and privacy since they live on a street that is "clearly marked with a 'Private Road' sign," according to a lawsuit the couple filed this week in Allegheny County's Court of Common Pleas. A copy of the April 2 complaint can be found below. According to the Borings, they purchased their Oakridge Lane home in late-2006 for "a considerable sum of money," noting that a "major component of their purchase decision was a desire for privacy."

That is clearly a long gravel driveway. The view of the pool is from private property. I say they win.

From their name I wouldn't think any one would give a crap one way or another what the Borings did in their yard. But now I am curious...

That's the sort of place I'd live. And if someone came down my private road, while I'd be pissed, I'd hope that I was doing truly shocking things when they got there. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

I see it's gone downhill since they bought the place. Must have put all their maintenance budget into the pool. I especially like the plywood door with no steps outside. I have a feeling that if the house were around where I live, they couldn't get an occupancy permit until they did some major work. Maybe Google should take down the satellite pic and rent a small plane to circle over their overpriced paradise for an hour every day. The Borings should sue Zillow and every alphabet agency in the government too.

I stand corrected. Prior to looking at the complaint, I thought they were speaking of a satellite or aerial pic. If Google or their agents came on my property and took photos without my permission and then published them, I'd sue for a lot more than these folks. That takes a helluva nerve.

With a little too much time on my hands, I followed oak ridge in from the main road via the street view. I didn't see any clearly defined 'private lane' sign.

I also looked at the map and satellite photos. When you look at that and the way the road winds, I can see where it could be a bit confusing as to where the public road would end and where the private road begins.

Anyway, I think Shakespeare was right about Lawyers in Henry VI. "If your house is on Google **I** can get you MONEY"

Now, if they sent a simple request to Google and got stonewalled, then I'd have a little different opinion. Otherwise, I'd have to believe that the good barrister wanted a change of pace from chasing ambulances.

what da hell is the point of gloogle taking pics of private residences and publishing 'em anyway?!? The aerial/sat shots are intrusive enough, dammit!

I was out at lunch about a year ago and a van completely covered in cameras (no kidding... must have had 12 cameras on it) came down the street. It was wrapped in vinyl "Microsoft Street View" logos.

So I did the obvious thing. As it drove past, I stood there on the city sidewalk and flipped it off. Both hands.

Man, I was so disappointed when Live Streets (or whatever they called it) went online and I wasn't in the image. I was hoping for a moment of internet infamy, but it wasn't meant to be. I guess they used the shot from when they were driving the other direction down the street.

Speaking of the satellite and street view images, e-C, did you know that county Tax Appraiser's offices are now just sitting on their lazy fat asses and "assessing" properties via google maps? Yep. 'Tis true. They pull up the property listing and look for any additions/improvements then backcheck to see if permits were obtained. If not, they reassess AND fine the property owner for not getting permits and/or inspections, etc.

Bastages.

I'll see ya the Tax Man's intrusion and raise ya a downtown "Redevelopment Agency" which declares properties "blighted" and "unimproved" based on gloogle aerial shots. Seriously -- if they can't see a house/business for the trees, they say it's "unimproved. It's held up in [CA] courts, too -- so far...

They then come in, eminent domain steal the properties, give 'em to their buddies to 'develop' and everyone's pockets fatten with that lovely 'free' federal redevelopment money.

Kelo was truly the end of that whole Private Property dream...
