Firefox and XP

Stuff
I don't remember how long it's been since I last ran SpyBot, but it's been at least a week.  This is quite a testament to Firefox 3.0's native filters, eh wot? The sumbitch still leaks memory though.

While I'm at it.  I installed the Windows XP Service Pack 3 about a month ago, but uninstalled it almost immediately because it stopped me from going on Standby, Hibernate or anything else along those lines.  Had it been a clean uninstall I'd be willing to give it a retry,  but it wasn't.   I spent a few days repairing damage, and I can't defrag because I have the wrong "MMC Consloe" now, whatever the hell that is..

As I feared, however, without Service Pack 3 I won't be getting any XP updates at all, and eventually this will cause problems.  Am I correct?  Is SP3 a critical upgrade, even with its defects?

Here's what I think.  I think Bill Gates "retired" because his company has become unmanageable.  That's what I think.

Hmmm...Can't understand what happened for you...I installed SP3 & IE8 and everything is working fine....Maybe one of your other 'clean & protects' was interfering...Maybe have to install with one (or more) of those disabled temporarily....Good luck if you try again...Like you say, I wanna have support & updates for as long as I can (6 years I think)

My main problem since installing Firefox 3 is that The American Spectator, one of my favorite news and commentary magazines, is blocked.

Not by Firefox itself, but by ultra-Lefty Google.

MSIE has no trouble reaching TAS, and TAS says that Google has already acknowledged that TAS is nice folks-- for conservative-- and not virus pushers.

But Firefox 3 still has the warning windows popping up with every article, no matter how many times I tell them to go ahead and show me the web site.

Hmmm, to run updates, or not to run updates... If you were running a server farm, with lots of sensitive data subject to the continuous barrage of Chicom hacking, I'd say probably. But as long as you keep the launch codes stored somewhere else, why bother?

I still run SP2 with no further updates. Of course, my machine is firewalled externally, and seldom placed on a lan without a local firewall running blocking all incoming requests.

On a brand new machine, I'd install SP3, but existing machines run the risk of being junked up.

So, decide - risk getting junked up, or trust your skills to protect your machine without all the updates applied.

(Kids: don't try this at home, I'm a trained professional)

Good luck!

I downloaded a security deallio this week and at restart, was knocked off the internet. Could NOT get back on forever until I disabled my Zone Alarm.

I called Microcrap and got passed all over the place with no answer. All I wanted them to tell me was if Zone Alarm and the security download weren't going to work together. No one seems to know.

I mean, obviously they won't work together but why can't they TELL me....asshats. I don't like being with out Zone Alarm. I really liked it.

Hi Stepperg...I also used Zone Alarm (about 4 years) and I liked it very well until finally something happened, maybe some change I made, but suddenly it worked erratically and I would find that I had NO protection (ZA would be shut down and I had to restart)....Finally I dropped it altogether and started using the windows firewall that came with SP2...

For issues with sites not opening in Firefox, try the IE Tab add-on, for issues
with Microsoft's troublesome, unsafe OS's, try Mandriva Linux ... I installed last week and have had no troubles, easy to use and the price is right too. My employers network printer, which btw doesn't work with any of the XP/Vista computers there (even with the IT guys spending hours messing with it) was set up and printing wirelessly in 2 minutes with no tech work at all.

Stepperg, I ran into the same problem about five years ago. The problem is Zone Alarm not SP3. Blocking your online access is how ZA deals with worms. Disabling ZA didn't help. I had to un-install it to get myself back online where upon I went directly to Symantec for help. Even though I had no Symantec programs installed on my computer, they nevertheless provided me with a downloadable tool and detailed instructions to fix the problem. I never did re-install Zone Alarm.

I installed SP3 and it seemed okay until it took one of my Excel templates, threw it on the ground, and stomped the living snot out of it. Fortunately, the removal was enough to get things working again.

Steps, that happened when thosesame two security updates were auto installed on MoSup's new computer. Drove me bats until I uninstalled the first one. I immediately stopped the auto updates.

System restore was clobbered olds-mo, and couldn't be used.

Rodger, then my best rec is to call msft, pay for support and let them direct you through all those wierd system files and rebuild your system register. They'll have you remove the sets of corrupted files and replace them with new ones. Listen for a tech who knows the system or persist for this type of tech. When you find this person, you will be a happy camper. All that third party stuff fixit stuff will only make things worse.
