That Wonderful Life

How Will We React?

By all accounts Americans behaved admirably during the last Great Depression.  Call it instilled moral values, or just fear of getting caught breaking the law, but most people sold apples on a street corner rather than steal.  The Bonnie and Clydes were few in number   I wonder about the coming depression, which seems to me unavoidable.   Are we the same people?  Feh.

While watching It's a Wonderful Life for the first time several years ago, I was stuck by how much we'd changed in my lifetime. Consider this scene from pre-ACLU indoctrination days of yore.  My point being that the audience accepted, even expected the cop's behavior.  Generation Me are not used to being deprived; couldn't recite even 5 of the Ten Commandments, and view the law as something to game.  When our elected keepers begin fearing for their own safety, they'll react.  Predictably. That's my guess.

Well, Jimmy did deck Ward Bond but firing into a busy street... that makes it close to a borderline use of excessive force.
