2008 - Finis

HFNY!!

Lounge

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a social scientist prior to the election. Topic = Palin and the responses she elicited.

This woman got frothingly angry when I said that I thought Palin's supporters saw in her a kind of self-sufficiency combined with small community inter-reliance that resonated with them. Several men were nodding as I mentioned her hunting and fishing and the fact that Todd Palin designed and helped to build their home.

Spittle flying through clenched teeth, she informed me that she had raised her (upper middle class, suburban, never saw a gun in real life or a garden or ....) kids to be QUITE self-sufficient and that she was certain they could learn to "I don't know, kill a racoon or something" if they needed to.

Uh huh, I thought to myself. Sure lady. Sure they could. [lotp]

AMERICA CAN BE PROUD

As the year draws to a close, I'll take a moment to celebrate what really is important.
In a few short days, an African American man will move from his private residence into a much larger and infinitely more expensive one owned not by him but by the taxpayers. A vast lawn, a perimeter fence and many well trained security specialists will insulate him from the rest of us but the mere fact that this man will be residing in this house should make us all stop and count or blessings - because it proves that we live in a nation where anything is possible.

Many believed this day would never come. Most of us hoped and prayed that it would, but few of us actually believed we would live to see it. Racism is an ugly thing in all of it's forms and there is little doubt that if this man had moved into this house fifteen years ago, there would have been a great outcry - possibly even rioting in the streets. Today, we can all be both grateful and proud that no such mayhem will take place when this man takes up residency in this house.

This man, moving into this house at this time in our nation's history is much more than a simple change of addresses for him - it is proof of a change in our attitude as a nation. It is an amends of sorts - the righting of a great wrong. It is a symbol of our growth, and of our willingness to "judge a man, not by the color of his skin but by the content of his character".

There can be little doubt now that the vast majority of us truly believe that this man has earned both his place in history and his new address. His time in this house will not be easy - it will be fraught with danger and he will face many challenges. I am sure there will be many times when he asks himself how in the world he ended up here and like all who have gone before him, the experience will age him greatly. But I for one will not waste an ounce of worry for his sake - because in every way a man can, he asked for this. His whole life for the past fifteen years appears to have been inexorably leading this man toward this house. It is highly probable that  in the past, despite all of his actions, racism would have kept this man out of this house. Today, I thank the lord above that I am an American and that I live in a nation where wrongs are righted, where justice matters and where truly anything is possible.  Let's applaud the man right now!

Eligibility case finds 'standing'?

A new case challenging Barack Obama's natural-born citizenship and, therefore, constitutional eligibility to serve as president has the potential to clear a hurdle that caused several other similar cases' dismissal: the issue of "standing."
I see a corollary to Obama's, so far, successful citizenship dodge ... Rod Blagojevich!  Yes, it's true that it's next to impossible to put a democrat in jail, else Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton, and most likely Nancy Pelosi would be there as we speak.  But in Blago's defiance I smell something else.  An armored vest named Obama.  Blago's lawyers have told him not to admit a thing,  because in order to nail him, prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald would have to implicate Obama,  and that is not going to happen.  It's one thing to railroad an innocent, like Scooter Libby, when the media are howling for an indictment within the Bush Administration, but a Democrat waiting for his inauguration? I said Democrat. Can't happen in the United States.  That's my speculation, anyway.   The citizenship deal holds some promise, however.  Here's the latest ...New suit claims unique state law enables citizens to demand proof.

Bowl Games in Boise

Boise Will Be Boise
LOL

I earlier complained about crappy bowl games in general, and the Humanitarian Bowl in particular.  That's where the Terps played Nevada yesterday, and it was actually a fun game to watch.  It was also the last time the ACC and this bowl will have an affiliation.  Last week it was initially reported that Maryland had sold just 8 tickets to the game in Boise. It was erroneous, they had sold 800+ tickets, but everyone was able to believe the earlier number.  And why not?  The game is played on a blue field, egad, and the temperature was a balmy 30º.

The game announcer told us that the Nevada players amused themselves on Monday with a snowball fight, while the Terps went bowling. All the funnier, since Maryland's coach Friedgen suspended seven players for much of the game for curfew violations.  When a reporter asked running back DaRel Scott what he found to do in Boise that caused him to break curfew, he remained silent.  So the "Fridge" was in a pretty bad mood to begin with.  When he left his room for the game bus, the hotel elevator was broken, so he had to walk down 19 flights of stairs.  Fridge weighs about 500 pounds.   Good game Nevada.  Anything called the Humanitarian Bowl deserves to be scrapped though.  Today there's something called the Gaylord Hotel Bowl.  I'm still laughing.

Obama's Guns

Yeah, Right ...

Just getting around to this, but it's still relevant. The post election spike in gun sales prompted The Him  to reassure gun owners, by denying any intention of "taking away folks' guns."
"I believe in commonsense gun safety law, and I believe in the second amendment," [Dec. 7th, 2008]
The problem is that Obama is a stone liar.  To this day nobody can point to a single statement, or promise, that he made during his campaign, that was  not a contradiction of a previous statement, or of his own record, such as it still exists. Take a quick look at his prior pronouncements, and actions, as they regard guns - like his endorsement of a a 500% increase in the federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition -  and be very afraid of this very evil man -- who was imposed on us, quite illegally.   I sort of wish Eleanor Holmes Norton was on to something, with her irrational fear of guns at the inaugural, but she isn't.  She's just stupid.
