We have apparently reached the point in the rise/fall cycle of democratic republics where the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the Public Treasury. Thereafter they vote consistently for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public trough, resulting in runaway debt and economic collapse.

The next step is usually some sort of dictatorship or triumvirate form of government in which all property is owned by the state. And that is followed in turn by seething resentment which gives rise to revolution, which re-installs democratic rule, beginning the cycle afresh.

ET, With all the ways the government can track you and watch you now there wont be any return to democracy.

I'm curently reading the book. The cartoons don't really capture the hidden, sneaky ways that this happens.
