Air Force wants to retire aging jets early
By Katherine McIntire Peters kpeters@govexec.com May 20, 2009

The Air Force this week announced plans to retire 254 combat aircraft next year, 249 of which would be removed from service earlier than scheduled. The equipment affected includes 112 F-15s and 134 F-16s, both tactical fighters, along with three A-10 ground-attack aircraft.

Prior to the announcement, only five fighters had been slated for retirement in 2010.

The early retirements pose short-term risk, but will give Air Force leaders the flexibility they need to address more urgent requirements as well as upgrade the resulting smaller combat air fleet and accelerate production of the next-generation F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Air Force Secretary Michael Donley told lawmakers on Tuesday during a House Armed Services Committee hearing.

The restructuring plan would allow the Air Force to blah-blah-blah.

Well at least the Marines will be safer in Iraq and Afghanistan. Less Air Force jets = less dead Marines from friendly fire.

Oooh Rah!!!!

I'm told Davis-Monthan has aircraft in different states of mothballing...
Some are ready for fuel and oil and can fly in almost no time at all. We can only hope these jets will be kept in a quick-ready state.

I'm thinking there's a pilot that quit for every aircraft that's mothballed. With the incredible shrinking military, more will follow.

At the rate the Obama catastrophe is going, Commander in Chief will be to an aide and a semi-retired General. They can play video games and watch reruns of Three's Company.

Let's try to make something positive out of this. After all, I helped build A10's and F15's.

Instead of junking these wondrous aircraft, they should be sold to US citizens for say, $100,000 each. We'll take 2. That would raise $25M, which could immediately be transfered to various Democrats.

Then, when America's pet retard starts WW3, he can buy them back from us. At a fair price.

Actually, Heir Shlong Meister, the first thing that came to mind was Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail.
