The Walmart greeter needed to be fired, Rodge.
He was doing the "Can I see your receipt" thing. He can ask, but he can't demand it. A shoplifting citizen's arrest requires you to see the thief select the merchandise, pocket it, and leave the store with it.
This greeter did none of the above. The person who hit him was charged with assault, which is the only reason he can't sue WalMart.
Greeters need to not act like store detectives. Preventing shoplifting requires training, both in how to get a conviction, and how to not get the store sued.
Kristopher,
The greeter may have asked for a receipt, but did not stop the customer after the alarm went off and the customer walked out, and merely copied the guy's license number. That led to customer assaulting the greeter, greeter defended himself.
If the greeter was remiss and fireable for taking a license number, I question whether or not that action was covered and proscribed in the greeter's training or instructions. Seems like a rather innocuous thing to me, unless the customer is a shoplifter. One more thing; the fact that the customer parked right in front of the door in what is usually a fire lane/loading zone makes me think he's one of those 'special' people with a big chip on their shoulder who regularly ignore minor rules and laws that keep us orderly, fair and civilized to each other. Walmart's action makes me wonder if they're scared of Al Sharpton.

She's not taking a dump in there is she?
Of course they are scared of Al Sharpton.
When you work for a large corp like WalMart, you follow procedure to the letter.
Unless he was told to go get a license plate number, he was risking his job.
I don't like it either ... but that is the way it is in corporate America.
Is that an office building near the center of Milan? I seem to recognize it, and they used to hold many castings for fashion shoots in that building, but I haven't been around there lately. Maybe I should visit more often?
