A chap named Matt Bateman (click text) did the work; Mary did the scouting, and I did the background image.
Well, it's an awesome observation regardless. Haven't seen Avatar, don't want to. But it's no surprise that it may be a re-formulated story/message.

That's kinda like what I usedta tell my students in creative writing classes -- there's basically only one plot where humans are involved, regardless of whether it's man against man, man against woman, woman against man, man against nature, man against machine . . . or what:
Chapter I, we meet some guy (or gal) and are told whether he's (or she's) an asshole like the rest of us or a slightly greater-than-human asshole in some way, or just an asshole.
Chapter II, Mr. (Miss, Mrs. Governor, Senator, Doctor, whatever) Asshole either digs a big goddam hole and falls in it or finds a big goddam hole and stumbles into it or is pushed into a big goddam hole somebody else has dug.
Chapters III to Fin, Asshole keeps trying to find a way to get out of the friggin hole -- sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't.
Star Trek is merely a shoot-em-up western drama in a Sci-Fi setting and Star Wars is the story of Moses with death rays instead of scimitars.
Quick Rodg, dueling essays.

Avatar was indeed amazing in 3D, but it was a liberal circle jerk from beginning to end. Dances in Wolves in space, sounds about right. It's a revisionist Western, anti-vietnam, anti-Bush, anti-war on terror sci-fi movie, to the bone.
I have seen it.
I had tears in my eyes at the end. I'm not a tree hugger, but I do believe in the rights of people. I'm not anti-Corporate, but I am anti-theft. What that corporation was doing was destroying a beautiful place to strip mine for a substance which COULD have been obtained in a much less destructive way.
What do they call that technique for oil? Angle drilling? And it doesn't destroy the Earth/planet involved.
Which is why the movie is a total knock on corporate America and all of the other things I said above. Yes, they COULD have had things done less violently and more rationally, like things are done in real life...but that wouldn't push a liberal agenda quite as well.
Cameron even admits it.
There really is only one story involving males and females
Boy meets girl
Boy gets girl
Boy loses girl
Boy gets girl
The other story is:
Sands of Iwo Jima
I loved AVATAR yeh the plot was trite and predictable. But the visuals stolen ( an Homage) from pulp lit, manga, Cousteau videos, video games spoke to my %9 year old nerd . Monteray Bay Aquarium has jellyfish sea fans ect that were there too.
They weren't soldiers But MERCs .. and Mercs Can be over pround and stupidly aggressive. See Falluja bridge leader was on the American Gladiator war game show (i think That the title) after Desert Storm.
ps was Army Brat 8 yrs Navy Nough said..
