The last Senator to go from staunchly reliable conservative to numbfuk, in one heartbeat, was Orrin Hatch in 1993. As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and to the complete dismay of conservatives, he turned a blind eye to trashy Clinton nominees coming before his committee, and none were trashier than  Janet Reno.  Hatch refused to hear from any witnesses lined up to testify about Reno's misconduct as Miami's state's attorney, and likety-split she was A/G.   A little later, I read a small news item about the justice department dropping its probe of Senator Hatch's involvement in the BCCI scandal.  Huh?  I had no idea he was even being probed.  Prolly nobody did, because it was announced by the Clinton DOJ on the very day of his inauguration, Jan 20, 1993.  (In 2001 Hatch admitted to "shielding Reno from right -wing confirmation critics. )  There were other rumors circulating about, but I've always believed that Hatch made that deal with the devil over BCCI. Now we have Coburn.  Read the whole article [Coburn bashes Fox, praises Pelosi].  I can think of but 5 reasons for his statements.  In the order of their likelihood: He's bored being a Senator  (but likes being a prince). He's having an affair with a sophisticated eastern liberal Had just popped some Ecstasy Has some enmity for fellow Sen. Inhofe, and is lashing out He never read his own book . Whatever the reason, Dr. Coburn has clearly jumped the shark.  Sigh.
