Jewish court sentences dog to death by stoning

A Jerusalem rabbinical court condemned to death by stoning a dog it suspects is the reincarnation of a secular lawyer who insulted the court's judges 20 years ago, Ynet website reported Friday.

According to Ynet, the large dog made its way into the Monetary Affairs Court in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem, frightening judges and plaintiffs.

Despite attempts to drive the dog out of the court, the hound refused to leave the premises.

One of the sitting judges then recalled a curse the court had passed down upon a secular lawyer who had insulted the judges two decades previously.

Their preferred divine retribution was for the lawyer's spirit to move into the body of a dog, an animal considered impure by traditional Judaism.

Clearly still offended, one of the judges sentenced the animal to death by stoning by local children. [Full]

Also the story refers to "Ultra Orthodox" Jews. I know of Orthodox Jews who have dogs as pets. So you are probably looking at some weird Jewish sect.

The get taught to read, write, and do basic arithmatic. Then they get taught the Torah and the Talmud. Nothing else. No science, no geography, nothing.

No TV, no radio, no internet. Just news posted on a bulletin board by religious authorities.

Shayne said...: I'm an orthodox Jew and I am appalled by this. Many orthodox Jews own dogs (myself, a Rabbi's son, included) and the Torah is very specific about how to treat animals (with kindness).

Shayne said...: After researching the original story, it seems the writer is quite the anti-Israeli. Apparently, the "stoning" was telling children to throw rocks at it because it was a big dog and it was not leaving them alone (therefore scaring the kids).

It's amazing what people will write - even Israel's when they want to belittle the Jewish state. It wasn't even a YNet article, it was from AFB. Only the BBC is more anti-Israel that AFB (okay, maybe Reuters also).; 6/19/11, 11:32 PM
