Edward G Robinson never in his life would drink even this era's instant coffee, let alone make it at home. Even my mother opined at the time "that stuff is horrible!" It is useful in some food recipes however.

When Kahlua was popular in the early 80's I made my own using grain alcohol and instant coffee. You're right, like instant potatoes it's only good in recipes.

The reason it is called "instant" if the water is heated to exactly and added to the powder in just the right way, and stired properly, just for an instant it taste like coffee. The rest of the time it taste like crap

Six months ago, I had the best coffee of my life: Tim Horton's. Haven't had it since, but t'other day I looked for it on Amazon, and sure enough, a pound is on its way, should be here Monday. I'll let ya know if it lives up to my expectations.

My mother has allergies, and sometimes if she's run out of allergy tablets when she's suffering from them she'll drink a cup of instant coffee, which helps her deal with the attack -- possibly because of the caffine, but real coffee doesn't give her the same effect.

So there's a jar of instant coffee in the house. In the medicine cabinet, not in the kitchen -- no-one actually WANTS to drink the stuff.

Coffee: buy green beans, roast once a week, grind immediately before brewing... it's best that way.

And make it in an AeroPress (Thanks MC for your recommendation of several months ago - got one and really like the results).

"Coffee: buy green beans..."

Bleaah! Use COFFEE beans, not green beans. The result will taste FAR better.
