They never were 'secret'. They always could call you. They only cost what any other call costs based on what you pay per minute. I dont trust the 'do not call' thing anymore than any other guvmint service. This 'threat' has been circulating for YEARS.

I'm purty sure that number puts you on top of the list.
I've done it nevertheless. Thanks for the tip, dude.
Fake,

From the FTC: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/phonefraud/register.shtml
"The National Do Not Call Registry accepts personal cell phones and home numbers. There is no deadline to place a cell or home number on the Registry. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers, so most telemarketers don't cold-call consumers on their cell phones."
They can only charge you if you answer. Don't answer, eventually they go away.

It may well be a fake - but using Snopes as a source hardly lends credence. To anything.
Sorry Rodge... seems this is the scam.

others call it a scam...
it happens don't sweat it.

Makes no never-mind to me. I get paid by the kilo-band.
So given that I never answer a phone number that I don't recognize (meaning: "doesn't show up as a name"), then why would this bother me?
Also, the libertarian in me does not need or want another .gov agency to do what I can easily do myself.
Reread your link, M1911. The scam in question seems to be from people calling you not you calling the number.
"... The Better Business Bureau warns consumers that scammers are making phony phone calls claiming to represent the National Do Not Call Registry.
According to DoNotCall.gov, The calls claim to provide an opportunity to sign up for the registry. These calls are not coming from the registry or the Federal Trade Commission. You should not respond to these calls..."

Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry?
Yes, you may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.
You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don’t call consumers on their cell phones without their consent.
