Nah, they're just looking for a side road...I mean, they're driving on the side of the road...no wait, they're driving on their side of the road. Ah, screw it--it sounded a lot better in my mind.

I was in South Dakota when a blizzard hit. Spent the night in Mitchell. Did you know that's where the world famous Corn Palace is? I did not know that, but I do now.

They did a terrific job clearing the interstate, and we were heading down the road the very next day.

That was from a spot near Wall, SD a few weeks ago when we had that wind storm come through the Dakotas with 70+ winds constantly for an entire day.

I've been to Wall a few times. I love the place, though it really makes the term tourist trap inadequate.

In South Dakota the trucks are like cows- if you catch them sleeping you can tip them over...

Skoonj - I spent the night in the basement of a gas station with 30 other travelers in Kadoka, SD back in the 60s. We worked our way through the blizzard until we stopped at the gas station and the owner didn't want folks out on the highway (no interstate yet) so he let everyone who stopped spend the night in his basement.

Driving out of Mitchell, SD, the next day, the temperature was a couple of degrees above freezing by noon. That lead to an odd situation on the road.

The crews did a very good job of clearing snow, so the going was fine ... except at the many overpasses. While the temperatures were just above freezing, beneath the overpasses the snow, which was melted a little, was cooler, and froze! So as we went along, we were fine till we got to an overpass, then had to watch out for ice. Kept me awake.
