Patton died in a car wreck very shortly thereafter. Government started really growing under FDR, did it not? Modern statist totalitarianisms (socialism, fascism, and progressivism) have common theoretical roots.
I'd put the start of the presidential trend at Teddy Roosevelt and the rise of the Progressives (who became reviled, changing their movement's name to Liberals, thereby screwing-up political labels forever).
