Awk is Turing complete. You can write entire programs in awk.
Knowing that fact makes one almost as mentally disturbed as one who actually writes said programs. -

These days, most of us just rip off the awk scripts from the actual crazy people that wrote them and posted them. Example: http://www.pement.org/awk/awk1line.txt
It doesn't keep us completely sane, but it helps.
