Being married to a SouthEast Asian woman for over half a century, I've put a lot of stuff like that on various foods.
It's an absolute MUST-HAVE for lumpia (eggrolls/spring rolls). Great for chicken, too.
The big name in the business is Mae Ploy, which is o.k., but I prefer the Thai stuff, especially the Pantai, which comes in hot or mild. The hot is just about right, not strong enough to burn the tongue into submission and shut down the olfactories.
Also have downed thousands of bottles of Mafran and Jufran (banana catsup) over the past 50 years.
Here's the Pantai label:

That sauce is wonderful. First tried it in Thailand many years ago. Liked it so much I married the girl that introduced me to it. Been using it ever since. Some of the people I've introduced it to put it on everything, including pop corn. If you experiment with different brands, you'll find they have a significantly different taste. And by now, you probably know it's just as hot coming out as it was going in.

You mentioned Gold Bond and Almay. My wife has dumped the Gold Bond in favor of Babyganics Baby Eczema care cream. You don't have to have eczema, or be a baby, to benefit from it. However, it is a cream and not a powder. Walmart has it.

Switched to AMMAN'S Powder about 30 years ago - Great as a deodorant too, without smelling like Listerine.

or make your own
Ingredients:
• ½ cup distilled white vinegar
• 1 cup sugar
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon Chinese-style chili-garlic sauce, or to taste
Directions:
1. In a small saucepan, combine the vinegar and ½ cup of the sugar. Bring to a low boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Lower the heat to medium and stir in the rest of the sugar. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently as the mixture comes to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and add the salt. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chili-garlic sauce, and remove from heat.
2. Let cool and serve at room temperature. - 9/20/14, 3:12 AM
