That reminds me of a story our father used to tell--he was born in 1910, to a very poor family down in the Ozarks. As a child, he wanted a bicycle, but his family couldn't afford one. Someone took pity on him and gave him a bicycle; he loved that bike and literally rode the tires off it. Too poor to buy new tires, he tied rope around the rims, and found that it worked surprisingly well. However, every time the knots came around and hit the ground, the bumps reminded him of how poor he was.
